The children were recognized as Students of the Week andor Month. vinyard Elementary gives January Vineyard Elementary recently honored Norm DeWitt as "Faculty Member of the Month". Mr. DeWitt has spent his entire ten-year teaching career at Vineyard. He said that what he likes most about Vineyard is "the students and parents are first class and the faculty is one-in-a-million." Mr. DeWitt believes that students stu-dents need a mixture of academics and a few fun, hands-on hands-on activities so that the learning experience will be a positive one. ADpOEO E)3cGi7l!3G E0toG eCaararjoo' The Alpine School District has announced the transfer of three elementary principals to other schools within the District and the appointment of one new principal. The transfers move the three present principals to principalships at other schools. John Bushman, presently at Forbes Elementary in American Fork, will head the new elementary elemen-tary school now completing construction con-struction in Lehi. Bushman began his career in the Alpine School District as an elementary teacher at Sego Lily in Lehi. He also taught at Forbes Elementary Elemen-tary before becoming the Principal Prin-cipal in 1987. Steve Cherrington will move from his present position at Windsor Elementary to the new elementary facility now under construction in Cedar Hills. Cherrington has been with the Alpine School District since 1974 when he began as a teacher at Geneva Elementary. He has been the Principal at Windsor since 19S-1. Glenn Martin will assume recognition Jennifer, Devan, Heather, and Bryan. Dean Ferguson was selected as Vineyard's "Staff Member of the Month". He has been at the school for about 15 years and he said that he enjoys working with the faculty and students. Mr. Ferguson believes that a person needs as much education as he or she can obtain. "If you want financial success in a given field, you need to put your all into your education," he said. Fishing, hiking, biking, and being out of doors are activities he enjoys. He is married and has a son. the leadership post at Sego Lily Elementary in Lehi. He has been the acting Principal there this past school year. Previously, Pre-viously, he was the Assistant Principal at Orem Junior High for two years. He was an educator with Provo School District Dis-trict for ten years before coming to Alpine. In addition, Karen Dunn, now a teacher on special assignment assign-ment working with Gifted and Talented programs in the District, Dis-trict, has been named as a new elementary principal for this coming school year. Peggy Chestnut was named school "Patron of the Month". Mrs. Chestnut has two children at Vineyard. She said that she has always enjoyed working with teachers and seeing that they enjoy teaching her children. She believes that all children deserve to learn in a non-violent place, with people who care. Mrs. Chestnut enjoys doing all kinds of hobbies and learning new things. She has lived in Utah for 14 years and has had two children already graduate from Vineyard. She noted that she has enjoyed being part of the PTA this year. Students "digest" geography lessons It must be the dream of every geography teacher to have their students truly "digest" their geography lessons. , For Elayne McArthur's 7th grade Utah history classes at Orem Junior High School, that hope became a figurative and literal reality recently with the teacher's innovative approach ap-proach to teaching geography. McArthur spent six hours baking a total cf 34 cakes each shaped as the state of Utah and frosted in white and had students stu-dents in her classes divide into groups to decorate the creations with small candies and sweets to create a replica of the state and its main geographic features. After a 3-D test that found the students working as a team to outline the topographical features, fea-tures, their knowledge was also tested with a written examination. examina-tion.
