EDDY Eight Alpine Dist. students to compete at National History Fair Eight students from two Alpine Al-pine District school shave earned the right to compete at the national nation-al competition of the History Fair to be held at the University of Maryland, D.C. in June. The eight are among 30 students stu-dents from the State of Utah to proceed to the nationals. The winners win-ners were selected from among hundreds of competitors at the State History Fair held recently at Brigham Young University, the event selects winners in numerous research categories with historical prospectives. Five of the eight Alpine District Dis-trict winners are from American Fork Junior High School, with teacher Janice Mayne as the coach. Kristen Runolfson, an 9th grader at the school won best of show at the Fair with research into "Coal in Castlegate." As the champion, Kristen will have her airline ticket paid to the nationals. nation-als. Our Seniors felt young an gay again as they listened to their sweet musical voices. We want to think Mrs. Nyman and their director Mrs. Mortimer for the time and effort they give. Thanks to Susan Crowther for arranging this program. Regarding our Tours, the Ogden tour is filled and so is the Scott Hamilton Magical Show on Ice. We are taking names for the Castle Dale Pageant in August and also the Manti Pageant in July. We will get the details out soon. We have a Wendover Tour planned for overnight on June 15th and 16th. Family history classes continue at BYU May 22 Genealogy and family history classes will be offered Sunday, May 22, at the Utah Valley Regional Family History Center on the fourth floor of Brigham Young University's Lee Library. The center is open every second and fourth Sunday of the month from 9 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. and on weekdays and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. The public is invited to the free classes taught by genalogy research consultants. con-sultants. A reception honoring the couple will be held Thursday, May 19, in the Historic County Courthouse in Provo, from 7 to 9 p.m. Christine graduated from Mountain View High School Jann Brown to Don Wakefield Jann Brown, daughter of Burke R. and Lisa P. Brown of Orem, will marry Donald E. Wakefield, son of Jack and Myrna Marsh of Orem, and Donald and Nancy Wakefield of La Canada, California, on Saturday, May 21, 1994, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. A reception will honor the couple that evening from 6-8:00 p.m. in the Provo County Court House Ballroom. The bride-to-be graduated from Orem High School. She attended at-tended Utah State University and is currently attending Utah Valley State College, studying communicative disorders. Her fiance graduated from Community Artists Concert seeking talent The SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre in Orem is once again presenting a Community Artists Concert, June 23 and 24 as part of the 1994 summer season. More in-depth research re-search will be taught using additional addi-tional resources, such as genealogical periodicals, library catalogs, and county histories. Two classes will discuss the International Genealogical Index. An IGI class for computers will be at 10 a.m.; IGI on microfiche will begin at 2 p.m. where she was a member of the National Honor Society and served as head cheerleader. Utah Valley Choral Society to present benefit concert The Utah Valley Choral Society will be presenting a benefit concert in behalf of three-year-old Kyle Loveless, who was severely injured in an auto-pedestrian auto-pedestrian accident last fall. The nature of his head injury will require re-quire on-going therapy and a relearning process. The concert will consist of American heritage and Broadway music. It will be held on May 25 at the Provo Tabernacle at 8 p.m. Suggested donation is $5 per person, $15 per family. Kyle is the son of Kerrie and Janine Loveless of Orem. The Aid Association for Lutherans Branch 7727 has offered of-fered to match donations of up to $500. They were married at Wenatchee, Washington, in May, 1934. Richard was born in Washington state, the oldest child in a family of seven. During his early life he worked in farming, farm-ing, ranching, dairying and construction. con-struction. The Pratts moved to Provo in 1957, where Richard graduated from BYU, and worked as a seminary teacher with the LDS Church Education System for 20 years. He has always been active in the church, holding numerous leadership positions at branch, district, ward, and stake levels. He is a well-known speaker at youth conferences, firesides, and BYU summer programs. His interests include gardening, woodworking, fine furniture and cabinet making, backpacking and survival trips. He has always been a student of the scriptures, as well as enjoying reading non-fiction histories and biographies. Adaline KearL Pratt was raised in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, the fourth of eleven children. She has also served in may LDS Church callings in Sunday Sun-day School, MIA, and Relief Society. In 1953, Mrs. Pratt was honored as Mother of the Year for North Central Washington State. Adaline states that "of all the successes suc-cesses in life, there is no greater success than raising a good fami- ly-"- Although her home has always al-ways been the most important thing in her life, she has found time to serve her community in many ways. She was a member of the American Cancer Society Board, and volunteered for the American Red Cross. Adaline's hobbies include crafts, music, sewing, oil painting, paint-ing, and quilting. One of her quilts was chosen as Bicentennial winner of the Utah State sponsored spon-sored quilt contest, in 1976. The quilt, which was titled "The Spirit of American S peaks," was displayed dis-played at the City Center, Logan State University, and finally in the rotunda of the Utah State Capitol Building in Salt Lake City. i 1 - ! The Pratts have served missions mis-sions in the Wenatchee, WA District; Dis-trict; Grand Coulee Stake, WA; Southwest Indian Mission in Holbrook, AZ; the Iowa Des Moines Mission; and the Kiribati Islands. In 1978-80, they were the first LDS Education Missionaries to the Gilbert Islands. Richard served as Branch President and Headmaster of the Moroni Community Com-munity School, while Adaline served as school nurse, purchasing purchas-ing agent, student dorm manager, and school vocational instructor. Upon their return from the islands, the Pratts served as leaders -in the Vietnamese Viet-namese LDS Branch in Utah County. The accomplishment which the Pratts are most proud of is raising six successful children, besides nurturing several foster children. They have 73 descendants. descen-dants. They are proud of their 37 grandchildren and 30 greatgrandchildren. great-grandchildren. Their family and friends are pleased to honor them, as they celebrate 60 wonderful years together, and extend ex-tend best wishes for many more years of happiness. Local teacher to attend NEH-sponsored NEH-sponsored seminar A local teacher has been awarded a stipend by the National Nation-al Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), a federal grant-making agency to participate par-ticipate in the 1994 program of Summer , Seminars for School Teachers. Adrienne Morris, English teacher at Orem High School, will participate in a seminar entitled, "Virginia Woolf: Major Novels." The 5-week seminar will be held at Regents College in London Lon-don England, and be directed by Prof. Katherine Hill-Miller of Long Island UN., New York. I |
