Orem High's David Farmer named State Sterling Scholar On Wednesday, April 6, Orem f High's seven Sterling Scholar I finalists participated in the state interviews at Woods Cross High School. The following week, on j April 13, the finalists attended the Deseret NewsKSLTelevision Sterling Scholar Awards Ceremony at Cottonwood High . School. At the awards ceremony, . the state winners and runners-up were announced. David Farmer was named the State Science Sterling Scholar. David has completed extensive hours of research at the Univer-; Univer-; sity of Utah where he studied -electromagnetic fields and their effects on the brain enzyme that causes depression. For his work, L David was selected as a Westin- ghouse Science Talent Search Finalist. He is also team captain for the Orem High Academic Decathlon Team and is the school's Century ni leader. In recognition of being a state winner, win-ner, David received a $1,000 check from Deseret News and KSL Television. View Seminary announces Mountain View Seminary announces their fourteenth annual seminary graduation, gradua-tion, to be held May 20, at 7:00 p.m. in the Mountain View High School auditorium. These students were and are members of the Orem High Symphonic and Jazz Bands and were able to receive valuable musical help ' from various clinicians, as well as spend quite a bit of time relaxing. While in Las Vegas, the Symphonic Sym-phonic Band was able to have a clinic with Tom Leslie, director of bands at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Mr. Leslie commented com-mented that he rarely hears bands play with the musicianship that the Orem High band displayed. On April 30, the Symphonic Band performed at the Desert Winds Concert Band Invitational at UNLV, pitting their musical skills against those of 19 other bands from California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, and Utah. U recently turned in an award-winning performance at a competi ratings, the highest ratings given to any band at the festival. The Symphonic Band also received the Presidential Award for an outstanding performance. The trip to Las Vegas encompassed encom-passed more than a winning performance per-formance at UNLV. A few hours were also spent at the Hoover Dam, a marvel of engineering, which provided beautiful scenery as well as an educational experience. ex-perience. The students returned from their eventful trip on May 1, tired Orem Junior High honors students tonight at ceremony Orem Jr. High School and the PTSA will honor the ninth grade class this evening in a special ceremony recognizing academic performance and extracurricular honors awarded OJH students. Invitations were mailed home to the parents of the special honorees by the PTA. Parents and family members are welcome to come and celebrate this evening eve-ning of excellence. Following the awards ceremony, a final send-off dance will be held in the school cafeteria until 10 p.m. The theme for the dance is "Forever Young," and has been organized by the Out with old, in with new at Orem Jr. High by Denise Hurst Student reporter As the 1993-94 school year comes to a close, we would like to congratulate the present student council for the wonderful job they have done. At the same time, we would also like to congratulate the students who have been selected by the faculty and their peers to represent our school in the student council for the 1994-95 1994-95 year. The 9th graders have an honors night with a night dance afterwards on the 18th, and to close the school year on the 26th, the 9th grade is going to Lagoon and the 8th grade will be going to Seven Peaks. Orem Senior Seminary graduation announced Orem Senior Seminary is announcing an-nouncing their graduation exercises exer-cises to be held Saturday, May 21, 1994, at 7:00 p.m. at the Smith Fieldhouse on the Brigham Young University campus. This year's graduation will honor one of the largest groups 1 and cramped; but glad to be home. When asked about his feelings feel-ings on band tour, Mr. Kevin Cox, director of the band, said, "I've never seen the kids get more focused and mentally prepared for a performance, and I've never heard them play better. It was nice to let iriy hair down and be able to relax with the kids." Four administrators retire from Alpine School District Four top-level administrators have announced their retirement from the Alpine School District: Dr. Luana Searle will retire from her present position as Assistant Superintendent K-6 Schools; Neil Christensen will step down as Director of. Applied Technology; Sherman Wankier will leave his post as Director of Purchasing; and Devon Ogden will retire as Assistant Principal, Mountain View High School. Dr. Luana Searle has served the students of the Alpine School District for the past 35 years-she began her employment with the Alpine School District as a junior high school secretary where she remained for seven years. She was an elementary teacher for seven years, an elementary principal prin-cipal for sixyears.directorof community com-munity schools for three years, administrative assistant to the superintendent for one year, and for the past eight years has served as Assistant Superintendent Superinten-dent over K-6. Neil Christensen, a resident of Pleasant Grove, has been with the Alpine School District since 1962, when he started as an Industrial In-dustrial Arts teacher at Pleasant Grove Junior High School He taught at Pleasant Grove High School in the Industrial Trades area for five years. In 1976 he organized and administered the Timp Industries program for the disabled where he remained for three years. From 1979 to 1987 he wfys the Principal at Lehi High School He served as the Principal receiving recognition in Orem Seminary history. A total of 512 students will be honored. He has been the Director of Purchasing since 1982. Before coming to the district dis-trict he was the General Manager for the Royal Inn Motor Motel and Restaurant for eight years. He worked in automotive sales for 20 years and played professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals Car-dinals for three years. During his tenure as Director of Purchasing, the district budget has grown to more than 140 million dollars. The purchasing department now provides support for 42,000 students. stu-dents. Wankier lives in American Fork. Devon Ogden is retiring after nearly 35 years as a teacher, counsellor, and administrator in the Alpine School District. He began his career in education in 1960 as a history teacher at Orem High School. He then became a school counselor. In 1977, he was appointed as Assistant Principal at Orem High School. In 1980 he helped introduce students to the district's newest high school, Mountain View High. He served as president of the Alpine Education Educa-tion Association from 1970-71 and then served two terms as president of the Utah Council for the Improvement of Education. He was elected in 1976 as a member mem-ber of the Utah Education Association As-sociation Board of Trustees. Ogden resides in Orem. been Doctrine and Covenants Church History. Those students receiving four-year diplomas have studied Old Testament, New Testament, and Book of Mormon as well as the current Doctrine & Covenants curriculum. |
