May 18. 1994 Page 9 ) 1 i JANE LAIRD Four OHS retirees to be honored at open house Four retirees from Orem High School will be honored at an open house in the school cafeteria on Wednesday evening, May 18, following fol-lowing the "Student Awards Ceremony" (approximately 8:30 p.m.)- The public is invited to visit with the retirees, enjoy music provided by Orem High students, and view the impressive Senior Art Show that will be on display in the east end of the lunchroom. Two outstanding teachers are retiring from the Home Economics Department of Orem High. Both have been teaching at OHS for twenty-five years. - Jane Laird received her B.S. degree from Brigham Young University in 1969. She began her career teaching a variety of home economics classes, and then specialized in sewing at Orem High. The Utah Home Economics Association recognized her as , "Teacher of the Year" and she received the "Golden Apple . Award" From Alpine School Dis-. Dis-. trict. Jane Laird is married and , has three children and seven -grandchildren. They live in ' Orem, Utah; Laughlin, Nevada; and Puyallup, Washington. She looks forward to visiting them as ' she travels around the United States. After some R & R, she .plans to volunteer in the community com-munity and hopes to teach classes to sewing teachers. The epitaph given by her students is "And Sew She Retired." V MONA PETERSON Orem High for the past twenty-five twenty-five years. She has taught all areas of home economics, most recently specializing in adult roles and interior design. She is the department chairperson at Orem High and belongs to NEA and AEA She is active and has held positions in UAVHET, AHEA, and UHEA. She was recently named the Outstanding Home Economist for 1994 by UHEA. Mona reports that she 'loves the students" and it's obvious ob-vious they return the sentiment. Mona is married to O. Kay Peterson Peter-son and has four children and four step-children. She looks forward for-ward to time for dried flower arranging, ar-ranging, gardening, travel, and free-lance decorating. David Tovey has been an educator for thirty years. He graduated from the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, in 1962. After a year of teaching in Bakersfield, California, he continued con-tinued his education at BYU, where he received his master's degree in 1964. He began teaching teach-ing at Orem High. In 1965 he received a National Science Foundation grant at the University Univer-sity of Illinois. He has taken two sabbatical leaves, during which he has taken further graduate classes, gotten married, taught school in Europe, and written text materials for WICAT Corporation's Computer Assisted Instruction programs. In 1990-91 David left Orem to teach in Las Vegas and returned the next year to work on the "Next Generation Schools" project funded by RJR QUANTITY: 1.45 ac-ft. David has served as department chairperson, taught all levels of math, including AP calculus, taught psychology, served as counselor, and directed a dropout prevention program. He and his wife, Madge, have six (wonderful) children and one (brilliant) three-month-old grandson. His plans for the future are unknown, but he knows he has enjoyed his career in education educa-tion and will miss his students and colleagues. Beverly Yocom has worked in the Alpine' School lunch program pro-gram for twenty-seven years: seven years at American Fork High, seventeen years at Pleasant Grove Junior High, and three years at Orem High. She has met many people and made good friends on each assignment. She is a native of Salt Lake, where she attended Granite High and graduated from Cyprus High. She married Alvin Yocom and they have one daughter and four sons. They now have twenty-two grandchildren and one "on the way" and three greatgrandchildren great-grandchildren with three more "on the way." Beverly and her husband have lived in American Fork and Pleasant Grove all of their married lives. After her retirement, she looks forward to sleeping past 5:30 a.m. and catching catch-ing up on things she never had time to do! She hopes to enjoy time and travel with her husband. hus-band. An open house will be held in his honor on Thursday, May 19, 1994, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Valley View Elementary, 941 East Orchard Or-chard Drive, Pleasant Grove. Robert has taught at Orem Junior High School as a sixth grade teacher, Geneva Elementary, Elemen-tary, Cascade Elementary and currently at Valley View Elementary. Elemen-tary.
