The official start up of a new, multi-million dollar facility at U.S. Steel's Pittsburg Plant in the Bay Area to manufacture tin free steel for western canmakers was announced Tuesday by Robert W. Raybuck, general manager, Geneva-Pittsburg Works. The new opertion will open an important new market for steel that is produced at the Geneva Plant, near Provo, Utah, and shipped to the California mill for finishing into a variety of steel products, Mr. Raybucks said. The ultra-modern facility, first of its kind in the world, now makes it possible for the combined plants to produce a complete range of tin mill products and become a full service supplier to western can manufacturers. In announcing the start up, Mr. Raybuck said the new installation represents "A solid vote of confidence in the ability of Utah and California employees to achieve a competitive future for our industry." "It further demonstrates U.S. Steel's commitment to serve the western steel markert and meet domestic and foreign competition in this region, "he said. Most of the steel produced at Geneva is shipped as coils of hot-rolled strip to the Pittsburg Plant in Contra Costa County, Calif., for finishing into tin plate, cold-rolled cold-rolled sheets galvanized sheets and, with today's announcement, tin free steel. Tin free steel is steel that has been electrolytically coated with a protective surface layer of chrome. In comparison, tin plate is surface-coated with a layer of tin through a similar electrolytic process. IIIillliiiBSlllllil .'my.
