Show Children's Emergencies The Bloody Nose A bloody nose is just one of the frequent minor trials of growing up, Most nosebleeds are minor and will stop on their own. Proper management, though, will result in more nosebleeds being controlled at home rather than requiring a visit to the emergency room, Parents can particularly make a difference when it comes to preventing nosebleeds from recurring. WHAT'S THE BEST TREATMENT FOR A NOSEBLEED? First, have the child blow all clots out of the nose. Then have him pinch the entire soft part of the nose closed for ten minutes (by the clock). The best way to hold the nose (assuming that the patient is doing the holding) is with the palm of the hand over the mouth and chin so that , the thumb and index finger are flattened out along opposite sides of the nose. The ' pinch should extend high enough on the nose so that the tip of the thumb and finger touch the bottom edge of the nose bone (about one-half way up). A cold pack over the bone portion of the nose or the forehead may help Have the child relax and sit quietly. If the bleeding does not stop after ten to fifteen fif-teen minutes, go to the doctor or emergency room. WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER THE BLEEDING IS STOPPED? Don't let the child touch the nose for 24 hours. It will feel funny, so there is a big temptation temp-tation to rub it or pick at it. The nose should not be blown for several days. Expect a fair amount of mucous discharge -perhaps with some old blood mixed in. It's a good idea to put a little vaseline just inside each nostril twice a day and at bedtime for about a week to keep the healing membranes moist. A than about one-third inch hymidifier at night helps into the nostril. If neither too. More nosebleeds are method helps, hire a spy likely if nothing is done to and have your spy watch moisten and nrotect the to see if the child is Water Control Will Pr Utah Destiny, Jielson edict Says Orem-Ceneva Times September 9, 1982 Westminster College Begins 108th Year membrane while it heals. HOW DO I KNOW THE NOSE ISN'T BROKEN? ' If the bloody nose has resulted from a bump, evaluate for a broken nose by looking for the signs of injury which accompany it. If any of the signs listed below are seen, see the doctor. A broken nose will cause bleeding under the skin and will cause swelling of at least part of the nose. Because the nasal bone is so close to the skin, bleeding from a fracture is easily seen as a bluish discoloration which tends to migrate up to the lower eyelid. After a few hours, a frank "black eye" involving only the lower lid may be seen Look at the outline of 'the nose to see if it is straight. Later on, swelling will either make the nose look crooked when the bone really is straight, or will hide crookedness caused by a fracture. Holding a string vertically so that it passes over the middle of the space between the eyes and over the middle of the upper lip as you look at the child from the front helps detect a subtly crooked or deviated nose. The string should overlie the middle of the nose all the way down. Broken bones are painful. Feel the bone portion of the nose out to where it meets the cheek" bones. If tender, consider a fracture. MY KID GETS NOSEBLEEDS ALL THE TIME. WHAT CAN I DO? First try measures to keep the membranes moist. A humidifier in the room at night -- or belter yet, a " whole-house humidifier - will help. Then try a little vaseline applied around the inside of the nostril - no more picking the nose on the sly. If you're satisfied that the problem isn't sensitivity to dry air of nose-picking, see your doctor. There may be a problem inside the nose which can be remedied. Orem Community Hospital has a slide presentation which is available to the public on home assessment and treatment of minor injuries. in-juries. The program is given by one of our emergency physicians for interested groups at their usual place of meeting. Alternatively, the slides and a tape recording of l he program may be checked out for private viewing. BYU Guitar Classes The popular series of guitar classes taught by Elaine Stratford will be offered again at the Brigham Young University Conference Center Sept. 14 to Dec. 15, according to Dr. Ralph Larson' college coordinator coor-dinator for the Division of Continuing Education. During the recent Campus Education Week at BYU, Mrs. Stratford taught three beginning guitar classes which attracted 60-80 people for each section. Many past participants in her classes "have expressed appreciation for her enthusiasm and skill as a teacher," Larson said. Howard Nielson, leading Republican candidate for Congress in Utah's third district, said today that if the people in this slate want to control their destinies it is imperative im-perative that they control their precious water resources. Nielson made the statement as an expansion ex-pansion of a talk given before the Kiwanis Club in American Fork this week, where he spoke of the controversial water delivery system being considered through north Utah Coulny and south Salt Lake County. At the time he urged careful consideration of a single covered channel instead of the three channel plan presently being supported by the Central. Utah Project (CUP). "The interests of north Utah County and south Salt Lake County must be major factors in any decisions made on this issue, "Nielson said. "Also, due consideration must be given to costs of the project, and the amount of land required for the project -- along with safety factors and flexibility." Nieison said today that he has heard serious concern being voiced around the new third district - expecially where the third district overlaps the Central Utah Water Conservancy District -- that the CUP is no longer serving the people nor meeting its primary purpose. . He explained that the CU'P'was given the task of bringing Utah's share (23 percent) of Colorado River water across the state to the Wasatch Front areas where : f ulation is con-- con-- ited. e said that v hile the : ot is a federal agency and acts as a part of the Bureau of Reclamation, the Central Utah Water Conservancy I r 1 a i .
