The girls outscored their opponents 193 to 110. This championship is even more dramatic when you realize one of the two seniors, Michelle Burnett sprained her ankle in Thursday's practice and did not play in the Tournament. Coach Freestone said she felt the outstanding player on the team was senior Laura Steinkopf. Laura in one game against Highland had ten straight service points, the Bruins won 15 to 2! It was Char Tanner's Tan-ner's excellent serving that got the win in the Olympus game. Coach Freestone said, "The girls hustle, and team play made up for their lack of height-a real concern at the first of the season." The real difference was our serving, ser-ving, we did not have more than 3 net or line violations in any one game, which is outstan-ding outstan-ding for any team especially this early in the season." With Michelle out the girls knew they had to take up the slack and work for the win. "We have never practiced without her in the line up and the girls really came through." . After opening league play with P.G. on Tuesday, the Bruins travel to Timpview on the 14th. They hope to repeat as Region 7 champs for the 3rd year in a row. Provo comes to M.V. on Sept. 16. Game time is S p.m. and 6 p.m. in the girls gym. Spikers Loo!; Forward to Big Season The Orem High girls volleyball team began their season last week with two pre-season matches mat-ches against Spanish Fork and Highland. Orem, the defending state 3-A champions easily defeated Spanish Fork in two games 15-6 and 15-10 in the season opener. The second preseason pre-season game against the Highland Rams was a much more difficult match mat-ch and Orem lost to the tall, talented Rams by scores of 8-15 and 9-15. According to new head coach Debbie Zir-bes, Zir-bes, there is a lot of young talent on the team with only two varsity players returning from last year's championship squad. "We're looking forward for-ward to a successful year and feel we have the talent to repeat as state champs if we can put thing together," said Zir-bes. Zir-bes. This week's games are at Timpview and. OremJV's Beat Sp. Fork Led by the passing of Mike Gammel and the running of Bart Rich-man, Rich-man, the junior Tigers rolled to an easy 29-0 victory vic-tory over Spanish Fork. The Tigers were never really threatened by the Dons as their of-fenese of-fenese moved at will through a leaky Don defense. At the same time a stiff Tiger defense anchored by Todd Chynoweth, Dan Cohen and Brett Larsen kept Spanish Fork in neutral throughout the contest. This week Orem will host American Fork JV at 4 p.m. Thursday. I'" f t ,S" '' ' ' ' , I s t i jst fin .
