Rotery Good Citizen Ausrd Goes To High Si Orem-Geneva Times -May 27, 19$2 l!!re I 1 08 2 Memorial Day in Orem evokes memories ol days gone by when local residents had no cemetery in which to bury their dead. Karly-day settlers would often lay their loved ones to rest beneath a hallowed hill, rather than to take them to a neighboring neigh-boring town which had a cemetery. Since the incorporation of the Town of Orem back in 19H), local residents had talked of establishing a cemetery from timo to time, but it was not until July 11. 1941, when the Orem City Council named Mayor B.M. Jolley, Antone Rohbock and Mrs. Donna York to a committee to investigate the advisability of establishing a cemetery on the Shaya farm located between the Provo Reservoir canal and the Alta Ditch canal at 800 East 15(H) North. !t seemed to be an ideal spot for a cemetery, lying at the foot of Mt. Timpanogos and located adjacent to the city's water supply. On the recommendations of this committee the city purchased the 108-acre site from the State of Utah for $4,500. Included with the property was ten shares of Alta Ditch water. The certainty of growth for Orem, resulting from the advent of heavy industry decided the Orem City Council to make provisions for the certainty of death. So, on March 17, 1943, the city approved plans for laying out a cemetery on the slope of Mr. Timpanogos. The area was landscaped and trees were planted to make the Orem City Cemetery one of the best-situated and most beautiful cemetaries in the state. Over the years, the cemetery has been improved im-proved and upgraded, and when visitors arrive next Monday to decorate graves, they will be very pleased to see how well perpetual care is being provided here by Orem City. Those workers who are responsible for maintaining the Orem City Cemetery deserve our congratulations and gratitude. Memorial Day is a federal holiday on which the' Orem Post Office will be closed. DR. MARY WALKER Readers who are interested in equal rights for women will be interested in the new commemorative com-memorative 20-cent stamp which will go on sale at the Orem Post Office on June 11. This new stamp honors Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War surgeon and advocate of women's rights. The first day of issue ceremony will be held at the Oswego High School, Oswego, New York, where she was born. Dr. Walker was a humanitarian devoted tothe care and treatment of the sick and wounded during the Civil War. She was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Andrew Johnson on Nov. 11, 1865, for her dedicated patriotism and loyalty to her country, often at the risk of her own life. An act of April 27, 1916, changed the criteria for the awarding of the Medal of Honor and on June 3, 1916, the Army and Navy were required to review the records of all Medal of Honor recipients to see if the individuals met the revised standards. Dr. Walker, along with 910 others, was disqualified. She refused to return the Medal and made numerous attempt to have the decision reversed. Finally, on June 10, 1977, the Assistant Secretary of the Army signed an order to reinstate Dr. Walker's Medal of Honor and to correct, the official records. For those interested in acquiring a very colorful and attractive conversation-piece in the form of a wall decoration, I suggest purchasing a sheet of this new postage stamp for $10.00 and mounting it in a stylish picture frame. The popular new Official State Birds and Flowers commemorative stamps would also make a very attractive wall hanging. I guarantee this is one wall hanging you can enjoy for years which will never lose its value ! Kim Anderson Named Nat. Award Winner Yearbook, published nationally.
