Show lames Nelson To Retire From Alpine School District By Delcres A. Bradshaw James B. Nelson will be retiring from Alpine School District with 33 years of loyal and dedicated service to the youth and employees of the district. He will be honored at the Annual Alpine District Social. ; Jim's entire 33 years of; school experience has been with Alpine School District. He began his educational career in 1949 as a teacher in the Harrington School in American Fork with 43 stpdents. ; In discussing his retirement, Jim explained, ex-plained, "I always managed to get the best kids in town in my class." He said he was grateful for the great parents and community support. ; He taught school for the first 17 years and was district elementary counselor for the next five years. He was then made Assistant to the Director of Pupil Personnel and for the next five years supervised the Special Education Services. ; In 1976, he was named Director of Student Services. Last year, Superintendent Max B. Welcker appointed him Director of Student and Community Services. ; "Jim has certainly done a tremendous job while being employed in the Alpine School District and he will certainly be Scholarship Grants Awarded Orem High Students Totals Over $200,000 Orem High School students did very well for themselves when amounts were added and it was founded that over $200,000 had been awarded in scholarships. From Brigham Young University, Trustees .Scholarship which include 4 years tuition, were given to Kelly Cannon, Taylor Drake, Larry Hilton-, William Peterson, Kyle VanDegraaff, and Jill Winward. BYU Presidential Scholarships, Scholar-ships, which include one year tuition plus possible cash grants -each semester were awarded to: Allen Arnoldsen, Sean Cannon, Pam Davenport, Debra Day, Felicia Ficklin, Randy Giles, Brenda Larsen, Tara Larsen, Jay Lawlor, Scott Pusey, and Vonda Skousen. "It is taking more than one person to fill his position," he added. Mr. Nelson has worked with students and their problems over the years. He has coordinated the District's efforts with Timp Mental Health, City County Health, Social Services and Juvenile Courts. Jim has been very progressive in working for Alternative Education for students. It is his philosophy that every child is entitled an education. He reported that one of his most exciting ex-citing and rewarding experiences came at the opening of the Dan Athletic Scholarship: Laurie Budd, Tuition (renewable) plus room and board plus fees; Mike Otto, Tuitjon (renewable) plus room and board plus fees. Assistant Superintendent, reported his association with Jim goes back many, many years. "I have a vivid picture of him out on the playground with all his elementary students hanging on his eoattails," Abel said. "His students loved him as a teacher." Jim was born in American Fork to Wilford Osmond and Stella Conders Nelson. He received his education in the Alpine Schools, graduating from American Fork High School. He and his wife, Willa, reside in American Fork. They have a married daughter, Ann Tolboe, who resides in Salt Lake City. Active in his community, com-munity, Jim was chairman for funding the new American Fork Library. He has been Steel Days Parade Chairman. For 26 years he has been active in the Lions Club. Jim has served as its president and was chairman of the State Lions Organization for a term. He has received the Outstanding Lion of the Year Award. Junior Olympic boxers are from 10-15 years old and "the open division are over 16. Orem will be represented by 12 year old Doug Hall. He was second in the State Golden Gloves in February at 132 lbs. and was last year's State Champion. Bryan Hill, 15, is a newcomer and shows great possibilities.
