' '"' ' ''' , 'St . , 4M 'fits' w 3' .A" Four Sterling Scholars From Orem High School Gary Barton, a senior this year at Orem High School was runner-up in the recent Sterling Scholar Awards sponsored spon-sored by KSL Television and the Dcseret News. As a runner up, Gary will receive a $100 cash award. All 490 students nominated as a Sterling Scholars receive a Sterling Scholar Certificate. Cer-tificate. The Sterling Scholar awards program was broadcast on KSL Television, Tuesday, April 14, live from Cottonwood Cot-tonwood High School, in recognition of the scholastic accomplishments ac-complishments of outstanding out-standing Utah High School Seniors. Forty-three' Forty-three' high schools par-ticipaiefl par-ticipaiefl in this year's awardprogram and each was given the opportunity to nominate one student in each of the following twelve categories: Knglish, Speech-Drama, Mathematics, Social Science, Science, Foreign Language, Visual Arts, Vocational Education, llomcmaking, Business Education, Music and General Scholarship. This year in the preliminary judging, there were Wit nominees. There were 1H0 finalists, ir. in each category, who entered the final judging. "';(' lour' finalists from Orem High were Jean Hill. Music; Craig Pope, General Scholar; Heather .Jordan Hassler, English; ami Gary Barton! Art. All finalists received a Sterling Scholar Pin and appeared on the Sterling S c h o 1 a r A w a r d s Program. The panel of judges consisted of curriculum specialists, representatives represen-tatives of the State Board of Education, instructors from Utah Colleges and Universities, and .members of the business community. Each winner received a ' $2.")0 cash award plus an portunity to receive scholarship of one year to any of 14 educational institutions of higher learning. Several of the 15 participating institutions offered scholarships to the runners-up as well as to the first place winners. CREER Robert Creer Seeking Election Joseph Robert Creer is seeking election to the office of Utah County Republican Party Chairman. Chair-man. Elections take place at the organizing convention on May 9 at Mountain View High School Auditorium, 645 W. Center Street, Orem. Delegates that day will choose a chairman, vice chairman, secretary, and treasurer for a two year term. Mr. Creer has been active in party politics, serving recently as education officer in his Spanish Fork area. He. was campaign manager for the Garth F. Smith race for Spanish Fork City Council and served., on the election committee during Charles Bates' race for state senate. He' was chairman to the Meet Your Candidate Banquet held at Spanish Fork City Park featuring Republican candidates to all state and local offices in the 1980 general election. Republican candidates can-didates in that election won 17 of the 18 races losing a senate seat by slim margin. Creer has stated that "to improve Republican Party credibility" must be the main goal of the new chairman.
