Armed Forces day will be celebrated this year on May 17. Let's Give Alaska Back To Russia Somebody Cares! Cares if you are new in town and feel kind of lost; If you've just added a new son or daughter, to your family; If HE has finally asked you to become his wife; If you or someone in your family is celebrating a very special occasion oc-casion ... Who? Call. 2ifS-6173 ' What? You don't think that's a very good idea? We only paid Russia about two cents an acre back in 1867. We practically stole it. Well, then, how about giving Louisiana back to France? The Louisiana Territory cost us less than a tenth of a cent an acre when we bought it from Napoleon in 1803. No? You think I'm off my rocker? Let me try once more. How about giving the Panama Canal Zone back to Panama? It has only cost us about six billion dollars. I hope you disagree with this suggestion, too-but how do your U.S. Senators feel about it? Preposterous as this last suggestion sug-gestion seems to most A meri-cans, meri-cans, our state Department has been negotiating with Panama to give the CanalZonebacktothem-and CanalZonebacktothem-and over half of our U.S. Senators Sena-tors agree. Why? Because Panama wants it back. Maybe we should check with Russia and France to see if they want Alaska and Louisiana back, too. We paid for Alaska. We paid for the Louisiana Territory. And we paid for the Panama Canal Zone. It's purpose is to inform the nation of the status of the Armed Forces. Nearly two centuries ago, a war was fought to secure individual liberty and representative government gov-ernment for the American people peo-ple -- a heritage which has tod a profound influence throughout the world. The ideals of the American people remain constant as the Nation Na-tion approaches its bicentennial. Only the mode of protecting these precious freedoms has changed. America's Defense Department subscribes to George Washington's Washing-ton's view that "To be prepared for war is one of the most effective effec-tive means for preserving peace." In 1975 tne .need lot vigilant and volunteer forces-in-readiness has not diminished. America's armed forces continue to remain vital to the preservation preserva-tion of the American way of life. US ARMY In 1775 the Continental Army was manned by volunteers who suffered hardships and made sacrifices in order to shape and defend a youngand energetic United Uni-ted States. Today's Army is combat-ready as demonstrated by its 21 divisions 13 active and 8 National Guard located in Europe, Korea and the United States. U.S. NAVY 1975 also marks the Navy's 200 birthday. . In a fast changing world, the Navy continues to play an increasingly in-creasingly important role in national na-tional foreign policy. Seapower deters aggression at all levels and includes the following capabilities: capa-bilities: . Ability to display a credible U.S. military commitment in almost any area of the world. . Ability to protect the sea-lanes sea-lanes for transport of critical imports. .Ability through its Polaris PoseidonTrident programs to provide an invulnerable strategic deterrent. Ability to provide, a mili tary presence without an automatic auto-matic commitment of force. U.S. AIR FORCE Although it is America's youngest branch of the military service, the U.S. Air Force has increasingly become one of its most vital defense forces. Since its establishment under the National Security Act of 1947, the Air Force has been charged with the primary responsibility for this nation's offensive and defensive de-fensive air operations. Despite a rapidly changing international situation as well as the current economic pressures, the Air Force continues to effectively fulfill that mission. U.S. MARINE CORPS For nearly 200 years, Marine Corps readiness in war and peace has been vital to the global policies poli-cies of the United States. Marine forces are organized, trained and readied to cover the widest possible spectrum of crisis situations and have been designed to integrate efficiently with forces of the Army, Navy and Air Force. In the Marine Corps, air and ground forces are integrated into a single entity under un-der a single commander -- using a single command and control system. U.S. COAST GUARD Each year the Nation's smallest smal-lest military service, the U.S. Coast Guard, adds an exciting chapter of accomplishments in search and rescue, fighting crimes on the high seas, prevention preven-tion and clean up of pollution, and protection of fisheries. The Coast Guard functions as part of the Department of Transportation Transpor-tation inpeacetime, andasanarm of the Navy in time of war. Because of the connotation of the name 'Coast Guard, many expect that this Service deals only with America's coastline. However, Coast Guardsmen are found around the world, including the Arctic and Antarctic. The Canal Zone was tropical swampland when we bought it. We built the Canal with U.S. taxpayers' tax-payers' dollars and we have run it fairly, on a nonprofit basis, for all nations that want to use it. .. Since we don't make any profit from the operation of the Canal, it may not seem important whether whe-ther we keep it or not. The importance lies in the fact that the Canal must be kept open for the benefit of all the nations of the world. We would continue to do so, but would Panama? To give the Canal t o the unstable, un-stable, left-leaning government of Panama could result in com-muist com-muist control in the near future. I f it did, would the communists run it as fairly as we have? If not, would they give it back to us if we were unhappy with the deal? Not a chance. So let's not be so stupid as to give it away now. Fly a holding pattern. As far as your money is concerned. Especially if you come into a little extra money ... a windfall, so to speak. You may want to keep it liquid, in case prices come down. Or keep it earning high interest in case prices go up. Or keep it safe, in case . . . ? A short term investor looks for three things before he puts his money down. High yield, minimum risk, and maximum liquidity. A First Security savings account puts all three together in a very attractive package, with the added assurance that the investment will never go down.
