Income poverty guidelines for determinig children's eligibility for free or reduced-price lunches and breakfasts and freemilk in schools during the 1975-76 academic acade-mic year have been announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agri-culture, USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is issuing the guildlines now to aid school boards and administrators in advance ad-vance planning and budgeting. Using USDA's national guidelines, guide-lines, each, state educational agency sets incom e poverty guidelines to determine which children are eligible for free or reduced-price meals and milk and up to 75 percent and higher for reduced-price meals. These are maximums allowed under present law scheduled to take effect July L The new guildlines are about 11 percent higher than those for the 1974-75 school year. k Income poverty guildlines take into account both family size and income before deductions for income in-come taxes, insurance premiums, pre-miums, bonds, etc. When jud ging a family's income level, local administrators can also allow for specified hardship situations si-tuations such as unusually high medical expensse, housingcosts which exceed 30 percent o f income, in-come, special education expenses ex-penses due to a child's physical physi-cal or mental condition, and disaster or casualty losses. Kathryn is a local journalist who left the area last Saturday for the big-time. She is now in Washington, D.C. working as a reporter for 'The Washington Post." Her work will consist of rewriting and reporting on the federal beat, and she will attend all Presidential news conferences. con-ferences. Miss Jenkins began her journalistic career as editor of Tiger Talk" at Orem High School, then moved on to edit the Monday Magazine" at BYU where she was a major in journalism and political science. She was employed as a technical writer for Management Systems Corporation inSaltLake City, and has written as a freelancer free-lancer for the Daily Herald. Her most recent position was as copy editor of the Ensign Magazine, where she was responsible for writing, rewriting, editing, and proofreading. She assisted in writing the June Conference Program for the Heritage Arts Committee of the Mormon Church. She hopes to continue to write for the church publications while she is inWash-ington. Kathy is a member of Sigma Delta Chi, the International Society of Professional Journalists. Journ-alists. She was honored with the James C. Miller Award for outstanding out-standing achievement in poetry at the Utah State Poetry Society in Salt Lake City last Saturday. She is the daughter of Mrs. Jean R. Jenkins of Orem.
