The Tigers, under head coach Bill Delaney assisted by weight coach Bill Bird and sprint coach Tom Molen, had their ups and downs last week as they lost by three points in dual meet with Provo Thursday (the first time ever) and then bounced back to take the coveted first place trophy at the huge BYU Invitational a first for any Tiger team in the 62-year history of three events. Senior weight man Paul Liston was a double winner in the discus and shot put, while Terry Belt won the two-mile and AlanGard-ner AlanGard-ner won the javelin to help outdistance out-distance strong efforts by Bonneville Bonne-ville and Olympus. John Ramage did his best ever in the discus with a hurl of 150 feet to take fourth place. Ron Monsen qualified for state with a 4:35 run in the mile but didn't get any points. The Invitational went right down to the last race the medley med-ley relay between Orem and Bonneville, Whichever team was ahead in that race between the schools would take home the top trophy. Bonneville dropped the baton on the first pass, with Orem taking second behind a record-setting run by the Hill-crest Hill-crest team. In the Provo dual meet, the final results went down to the last jump in the broad jump. Individual results: Soccer Team To Play Fri. Orem High School's number one rated soccer team goes into the state championship play-offs tomorrow on their home field at 4:15 p.m. At press time it looked though Bountiful, state champions the past two years, would be the Tigers' opponent but this would be determined byplay-offsTues-day and yesterday between Olympus, Souty, and Judge with the winner of that tie-breaker "playing second-place Bountiful. CoachGarland Fitzgarald reported that this is the best record of any team yet in the six years of soccer at Orem High. LUJ POICSO AKSIVIJf 6 DAILY! We Sell Everything" Orem Nine 11ins First League Oame "You're the best 1-7 team I've ever seen! This was the statement by Orem High School baseball Coach Dick Belliston to his young team after they won their first league game of the year Monday with a 9-8 victory over Kearns. The Golden Tigers play at Brighton tomorrow arid hasted Murray Wednesday. They close out the season by hosting Granger next Tuesday and traveling to . Kearns on Wednesday. The Kearns win was typical of the close games the geam has had all season long but coming up on the short end of the score in most cases. J.D. Bussio pitched five innings and Gary Warwood came in for the last two. Junior catcher Dal Hills kept the game in typical Tiger fashion as he picked off a runner at third base to end the game. The Tigers were jubilant; they didn't know what to say except that they'll be back next year with lots of experience. Belliston usually usu-ally starts four juniors and three sophomores in what could best be termed as a 'building" year. Against Kearns, the Tigers had a homer with one on base from Shane Robbins (The team's best hitter), while Allen Bjarnson had a solo homer and hits that brought in two other RBI's. Tuesday, the Tigers lost to Hillcrest 5-1 in typical fashion. Going into the final inning, the score was tied 1-1. Sophomore Brian McGinn pitched a super game, with Warwood coming in the last inning to get the final two outs. Hillcrest broke the game open in the final inning with a broken bat hit, a bunt, then a triple, a walk, an intentional walk to load the bases with the score 2-1. A grounder was hit to short stop Larry Tucker. He made a great play to keep the ball from going through. As the ball got to first baseman Bjarnson, it pulled him off base. He dived to hit the base with his mit, but the umpire called the runner safe. In a 5-4 loss in 10 innings last Thursday to rival Provo,' the Tigers put up their usual great scrap but came up on the short end of the score. A passed ball allowed the winning win-ning run to score after a nip-and-tuck game all . the way. Terry Could ran for Dal Hills after a walk, then Larry Tucker reached first on a throwing error allowing Gouldto score the second run of the inning. The score remained tied until the top of the 10th when pitcher Bussio singled, went to second on a throwing error which put Durfey on first. Hills' sacri-fly sacri-fly scored Bussio with the go-ahead go-ahead run. Each team scored a run in the first, then Provo made two in the fifth, but the Tigers came back to tie it in the sixth and then go ahead in the 10th with one run. Going into the final week of match play, the Tigers are in third place in dual competition behind Provo and Brighton. Our team is really improving and we did a little shifting a-gainst a-gainst Provo in order to give Tony and Chris Spackman a rest that afternoon so they could play in the Icebreaker Tournament in Salt Lake City," observed Coach Baugh.
