Hyan Durfee won second place for his entry in the 4th grade category. He received a letter of congratulations, a red ribbon, and a desk lamp from Pembroke's. Or the tradition that a loyal Scotsman must eat a wedge of Scotch Currant Bun on that same day for that same reason? It could have something to do with getting back to the basic food that shaped each mighty race. Black-eyed peas, combined with rice and seasoned with bacon, becamer a form of jambalaya, referred to as "Hopping John". Scotch Currant Buns, sometimes called Black Buns, is something like a fruit cake, but is hotly spiced and encased in pastry. Percolator Punch Pleases The Palate Fill your percolator basket with cinnamon sticks, sugar and spices and you have the tasty beginnings of a hot festive punch. This non-alcoholic spiced punch is especially appropriate for teen gatherings, church socials, and as an "extra" beverage where liquor is served. Vh cups pineapple juice 114 cups water 2 cups cranberry juice 1 tablespoon whole cloves ' Vi tablespoon whole all spice 3 sticks cinnamon V teaspoon salt Vz cup firmly packed brown sugar. Pour pineapple juice, water and cranberry juice Into bottom of automatic 8 to 12 cup coffeemaker. Place remaining ingredients in basket. Set heat control on "strong" and complete perking cycle. Hold on "mild" setting. Serve hot in mugs or heatproof punch cups. y Frosted Yams Brown 2 cans yams (1 pound, 2 ounces each) in 4 tablespoons butter or margarine. Mix 3 teaspoons lemon juice and 1 cup confectioners' sugar. Put yams in serving dish and pour sugar, lemon juice mixture over them. cm |
