Various Vari-ous studies have been made on the economic impact of BYU on Utah County, but to simplify the picture look at it this way: 24,000 students spend about $1,000 each during a school year, making a total of $24,000,000 for food, clothing, rent, cars, auto supplies, entertainment, en-tertainment, cosmetics, etc. Moreover, the BYU payroll of more than a million mil-lion dollars a month is spent mostly locally. The steady BYU building program, pro-gram, and large expenditures for supplies sup-plies and utilities also add to the economic econ-omic well-being of the community. DEVELOPMENT BYU is an active partner with commerce, com-merce, industry, and government of this area in efforts toward industrial promotion. The presence of a university univer-sity with its cultural and educational opportunities and research possibilities, possibili-ties, is an inducement for firms to settle set-tle here. Also, BYU, now owner of the Ironton steel plant property, is planning an industrial park which will spur growth in this area. , . - - .... Moreover, the Art, Music and Drama Departments as well' as student groups and other academic departments present hundreds of concerts, con-certs, displays, speeches, operas, musicals, mus-icals, dramas, and other events for cultural cul-tural improvement. EDUCATION Because BYU is located next to Orem, the residents of this area need not travel tra-vel away from home for the finest college col-lege education. The University also is the focal point for many symposiums, seminars, conferences, and conventions conven-tions of educational value to the local residents. The library, evening classes, educational displays, community school program, special courses, educational edu-cational television and radio, and other advantages are also open to the community. com-munity. The faculty members assist youth orchestras and bands, give school lectures, adjudicate school contest, con-test, hold campus fairs, etc. WORLD ATTENTION Brigham Young. Moreover, More-over, BYU is one of the showplaces of Utah, and thousands of visitors come here to visit. Then, too, it attracts conventions, con-ventions, conferences, and many important im-portant visitors who associate Central Utah with national and international news. Its student talent groups, such as the famous Program Bureau troupes, International Folk Dancers, athletic teams, Ballroom Dance Team, and dramatic dra-matic casts, take BYU shows all over the world and with them the word about Central Utah. BIG EVENTS It is exciting to live in Orem. The big university at its doorstep brings to the community big events such as highly competitive Western Athletic Conference Confer-ence sports events, high school basketball basket-ball tournaments, national basketball playoffs, national track and wrestling meets, science fairs, foreign language fairs, national forensics tournaments, LDS Explorer Conference, important people, national political meetings, and many other events which stir local interest, in-terest, activity, and business. The University's Uni-versity's facilities also are used to assist the community in such events as the.
