Big Wafer Project Gets Under Way A spectacular, eartn-shatter- ing blast three miles from Du chesne at noontime on May 31 will signal the start of construction construc-tion on the $325 million Central Utah Project, a giant water de velopment project due to have economic impact on the state and its citizens for decades to come. Bonneville Day" ceremonies, climaxed by the detonation of high explosives marking the start of work at the Starvation Dam site in Duchesne County, will be highlighted by an old-fashioned public barbecue and a program of Ute tribal dances. The guest list for the big event includes Utah's Bureau of Reclamation and water resorces experts, Indian tribal leaders and state officials. Principle speaker at the hour- long ceremony marking the start of the largest construction effort in Utah history will be Rep. Wayne Aspinall, Democratic Con gressman from Colorado and chairman of the important House Interior and Insular Alf air s C o m- mittee. Others participating will include Gov. Calvin L. Rampton, Sen. Wallace F. Bennett, Sen. Frank E. Moss, Rep. Laurence Burton, Rep. Sherman P. Lloyd, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Com missioner Floyd E. Dominy, former for-mer Sen. Arthur V. Watkins and former Gov. George D. Clyde, and representatives of the Ute Indian TRIBE. Three Bureau of Reclamation projects making uptheStravation Complex of the Bonneville Unit will be under construction simultaneously sim-ultaneously following the May 31 ground-breaking ceremonies. They are the Starvation Dam, Knight Diversion Dam and the Starvation Feeder Conduit. The Starvation Complex, a multi-pur pose unit, will store 167,000 acre feet of water behind an earth-filled earth-filled dam on the Strawberry River three miles upstream from Duchesne. Surplus flows from both the Duchesne andStrawberry Rivers will be stored in the reservoir, res-ervoir, but the greater portion will be divereted from the Duchesne Du-chesne through the three-mile long Starvation Feeder CanaL Water released from Starvation Reservoir will provide about 23,000 acre-feet of water for supplemental sup-plemental irrigation to 26,500 acres of land nearby. Equally important, supplies from the new reservoir will replace water presently used in the Duchesne River area which will be diverted to the Bonneville Basin. Additional benefits will include provisions for outdoor recrea tion, fish and wildlife habitat and flood control.
