Show THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN OREM Read this column each week for news of 'Happenings' scheduled by the Orem Landscape Improvement Committee Com-mittee to help beautify Orem. 'Happening' DMn't - - -To Try Again A survey of Orem last week revealed that the Mailbox 'Happening 'Hap-pening didn't happen as very few mailboxes were painted. In the interests of a prettier Orem another mailbox happening- is set for next week. Every resident with a rural-type rural-type mailbox on the street in front of their home is urged to paint it. Those who cannot find time to do it themselves are asked to avail themselves of either the Boy Scouts or the Junior Busines-men's Busines-men's League for inexpensive help. Two men, neither very bright, were helping to build a house. One kept picking up nails, looking at them, keeping some, and throwing throw-ing others away. "Why are you throwing away so many nails?" asked his companion. compa-nion. "Because they have the head on the wrong end." "You fool, those are for the other side of the house!" State Road Shops Paint Street Signs Utah State Road Shop crews were busy throughout Orem this past week painting highway street signs in response to a request by the Orem Landscape Improvement Improve-ment Committee. HDDS ffl OREM zzza Many Orem residents this last week were literally rocked and shocked whey they received their tax notice and started figuring what the taxes on their home and property will be this coming year. Our tax notice indicates that one piece of Property in south Orem has increased about one third another has increased by 50 percent. We find this pattern is quite consistent in Orem especially espec-ially in the south end of our city. Residents have been calling the office wanting to know why, so we have attempted to find the reason rea-son and as we have been told by an authority on the matter this is the reason for the increase. The state tax commission according to state law is supposed to reevaluate re-evaluate the state property about every five years. Orem and vicinity vi-cinity have not been reevaluated for several years longer than the prescribed five years. State workers work-ers have been working in the area for the past year, getting prices as to what people are selling their real estate and homes for. They have then tried to come up with an average price of the real estate worth in each area. After the average price has been found, they take 20 percent of the value, and from this figure they arrive at your tax valuation. A close way to figure your notice no-tice is take the total valuation on your tax notice and times it by five. If the figure you come up with is somewhat higher than the price you figure your real estate is worth as a selling price, then you should make a trip June 2nd to the assessors office and see if an adjustment can be made. One way to hold the tax bill down this fall is for Orem City, and the school district to reduce their mill levey. The city and the school district, should be able to do this with the new evaluation, evalua-tion, unless they are going to ask for larger budgets for the coming year. with PRATT & LAMBERT No more guesswork in color styling your home just the way you like it.
