Forest Officials Survey Watershed PLEASANT GROVE-With wa ter the most essential resource produced on the National Forest lands, forest officials watch closely the results of winter snow surveys taken by their department de-partment in conjunction with the Soil Conservation Service. Larry Lee, of the Uinta National Na-tional Forest, noted that in Utah over 80 of the useable water originates from national forest watersheds. He pointed out that these water sheds may i tie likened to a huge sponge wity water seeping into the earth from the snow and rainfalls. From its' underground storage area, the water then reappears re-appears as fresh, bubbling springs which in turn feed the streams located within the watershed water-shed area. The volume of the water fluctuates fluc-tuates with the changing conditions con-ditions of the soil, precipitation and plant cover, Ranger Lee noted. These relationships, in turn, are influenced by land use managementand the benefits or damages resulting from this land management extend downstream to the communities that use the water. Lack of precipitation during February and March dropped the outlook for next summer's water supply in Utah County, Stan Peterson, Pet-erson, SoilConservationService, said. Snow surveys recently completed com-pleted by Soil Conservation Service, Ser-vice, Forest Service andNational Park Service officials show that snow pack accumulations on nearly near-ly all snow courses in the canyon are below average.
