Show Orem-Geneva Times I - c - I I I It's amazing how many of the top athletes from the Western Athletic Conference won't be seen in the NCAA Championships Champion-ships this June when the track and field finals are run-off at Albuquerque, New Mexico. And there's one and the same Reason for all of the absences ... competition as a freshman. fresh-man. Competition in the freshman year in school automatically takes away one year of eligibility eligibi-lity where NCAA events are concerned. And this year, a host of the WAC's top stars are involved in this rule. Most prominent is Adolph Palmer, Camping supplies for your summer vacation. See our complete selection before you buy. League schedules were not available in time for publication publicat-ion in this week's special Scera edition. They will be printed next week. year. The Sun Devils are still eligible to participate in this event, hut they'll have to find someone else to run the first mile relay for the ASU team other ... John Rose, ASU's 16 foot pole vanlter. He participated parti-cipated as a freshman, too. There are several from our area who will be affected i in a year or so, including BYU's quarter-mile phenom, Bob Tobler who participated last year as a freshman. Maybe the coaches, in trying for big ger things too early, are jeopardizing some of the boys greatest potential performan ces, for as he matures, he learns and grows physically. Brigham Young University, although winner of only one WAC championship during the past year, is still the top school athletically in the league. Or perhaps it might better be said that the Cougars have the best balanced athletic pro gram among all the six conference members. The Cougars won the AllSports Championship for the' Initial year of the WAC's existence . . . and by the slimmest of margins, one-half one-half a point. BYU scored 41 points to Arizona's 40 and one-half points to win the championship. champion-ship. BYU won but one championship, champion-ship, that in Wrestling, compared com-pared to two for New Mexico, two for Arizona State and two for the University of Utah. But the Cougars finished second se-cond in four sports, and had a tie for second in another. The All-Sports trophy is being given by the conference in an effort to get all schools to build up their programs in all sports, not to specialize in just one or two. Arizona State, which finished down the line, could have done better if they been eligible in football and had a swimming team. BYU could have done better had they fielded a swimming team. All-in-all, it's a good program, pro-gram, and one that seems destined des-tined to do the job for which it was intended. Now summer is here, there will be fishing trips ahead, and some of those trips can be ruined for the darndest reasons rea-sons . . . like dropping your boat motor into the water. Motor dunking afflicts as many pros as it does novices, for it usually results from just plain carelessness.
