Early siluer mine aduenlure By Hal Compton, research historian, Park City Museum In November 2004, it will have been five years since the Sliver Mine Adventure, an underground tour of the historic Ontario Mine, was closed to .the public. Many years prior to that, however, underground mine tours for special groups were being given at the Daly West Mine, the New Park Mine and the Silver King Mine. Not long after a new electric hoist was installed at the Silver King Coalition Mine in 1937, a group of Park City business and professional pro-fessional men were invited to ride the new lift for an underground tour. The photo was taken just before . they began the tour. Looking very dapper, it would appear they were going to work on Main Street rather than into a mine. The photo was taken in front of the shaft, beneath the head frame in the shaft house. (Notice the flat cable of the hoist in the left compartment and a mine cage in the right compartment.) The men were members of the local Elks Club, one being mine superintendent Merle Heitzman, (10th man from the left on back row) who most likely arranged the tour. Next to him, wearing a slicker and hard hat, was an unidentified mine foreman or superintendent who conducted con-ducted the tour. The Park City Elks Club was one of the most successful and popular fraternal organizations organi-zations in town and is still in operation. Included in the group were John Tallon, mayor; Tommy De St. Jeor, city marshal; William Berry, fire chief; Bartly McDonough, city attorney; Jerome Paxton, city treasurer; and Sam Billings, deputy. Although he had his leg amputated because of a medical problem, prob-lem, "Rome" Paxton, as he was called, got around fine with the assistance of crutches. The tour group was lowered down the shaft approximately 1,300 feet where they were given a tour of the "workings," followed by a luncheon on the surface. Ore samples were a popular souvenir. United Park City Mine Company's experience experi-ence with mine tours began in 1995. Hundreds of locals and visitors enjoyed the experience of descending 1,500 feet into the Ontario Mine for an underground tour of the Keetley Drain Tunnel by mine train and then a short walking tour of the exhibits. Lack of business, especially in the winter, brought an end to the Silver Mine Adventure on Nov. 1, 1999. The Ontario Mine shaft house and hoisting works remain in place in Ontario Canyon. The Silver King Mine shaft house near the base of the Bonanza Lift at Park City Mountain Resort also remains, but its shaft has been sealed.
