Korfanta was recognized recog-nized for providing expertise and team leadership to Park City Mountain Resort since its first World Cup in 1985. "Karen Korfanta is a doer. She does whatever it takes to make sure our events are the best in the world," said Jenni Smith, director of resort administration. adminis-tration. "She is the best in the country at running races of this caliber and has been the leading force in organizing all of our America's Opening races." Korfanta, from Pinedale, Wyoming, was a member of the U.S. Ski Team and was selected for the 1968 Olympic Team. However, her Olympic dreams were sidelined after she injured her Achilles tendon. Korfanta moved to the Park City area in 1985 and was soon called on from the late Craig Badami to organize organ-ize the Resort's first World Cup ski race. In November of 1986 Korfanta came on board full-time full-time to run the PCMR race department. She is only one of a few women in history to be named a FIS technical delegate.. " I have had the opportunity to be a part of a great legacy," said Korfanta. "The Badami's allowed me to experience committed leadership and I've worked along side a professional pro-fessional staff and hundreds of dedicated volunteers. I'm truly honored to have received this award." ; Following the awards ceremony ceremo-ny for finishers in Saturday's women's slalom, Korfanta was presented with a statue of an eagle as the America's Opening crowd roared its approval. Austrians dominate Super G LAKE LOUISE, Alberta (AP) -Hermann Maier lead an Austrian sweep at a World Cup super giant slalom race Sunday, beating Michael Walchhofer and defending overall champion Stephan Eberharter. Maier finished in 1 minute, 36.69 seconds, 0.26 seconds ahead of Walchhofer, who won Saturday's downhill race. Eberharter was third in 1:37.24. "At this early point in the season, I'm surprised that it's happened," Maier said. "I'm very, very happy with a great performance." Maier, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who placed 10th in the downhill, was in top form from the moment he came out of the starting gates, getting faster as he flew down the course. The three-time overall World Cup champion has been recovering from a devastating motorcycle accident acci-dent that almost cost him a leg in 2001. "I have to forget everything from before my accident," Maier said. "I cant feel much in the right leg and that's often a problem in the gliding sections because I don't know if I'm on the edges or flat, parts of the skis. "It was good for me after the accident to have a goal: to learn to walk, maybe to ski again. Now the next thing is to improve skiing." Walchhofer said no one should ever underestimate Maier. "In super G he was training very fast and today he showed us he's back," Walchhofer said. Sunday's race was Maier's third super G win at Lake Louise. He also captured the title in 1999 and 2000. Maier, who placed 10th in Saturday"s downhill, is looking to complete his first World Cup circuit since his return to skiing. He returned for part of last season and won a super G in his fourth race back, but stopped training after the World Championships in February to have a pin removed from his injured leg. "Next year hopefully I'm not too old so I can get faster," he said. Maier foresees tight World Cup VIENNA, Austria (AP) - Triple overall World Cup winner Hermann Maier said Monday he believes this year's title battle will be very tight. Maier led a 14 sweep by the Austrian ski team in the Super G in Lake Louise on Sunday. He has returned to the pool of favorites for the overall title less than a year after his comeback from injury. However, despite celebrating his 43rd race win in the World Cup, Maier is convinced "it will be a tough battle this year." "If I am in great form, a lot can still happen. But I am not wasting a single thought on winning the overall World Cup," Maier told the Austria Press Agency. "All I want is to improve gradually again, so I can regain the title sometime soon." Following an August 2001 motorcycle motor-cycle accidents that nearly cost him a leg, Maier was sidelined for more than one season and has declared this his "comeback year." But the 30-year-old sees his lesser-known lesser-known teammates as hot candidates for victory. "Michael Walchhofer is in brilliant bril-liant shape, and Benjamin Raich has proven he can win in-slalom and giant slalom, and has also shown his talent in the Super G," Maier said. Explaining his win, which he called a surprise, he added: "In Super G racing, you need to combine speed and technical skill in the turns. This discipline is just made for me, but other athletes are better in the downhill down-hill or the giant slalom, not to mention men-tion the slalom."1 Maier said he's expecting "several more sensations." "Some runners who were named as the favorites ahead of the season will start to wonder," he said. "I think it will be one of the toughest battles ever this year." The next men's events will be held in Beaver Creek, Colorado, where Maier won two gold medals at the 1999 World Championships. AiM?n(eAfrVi En ate (Mortgage WHY REFINANCE?
