The following is part three of a three-part series. USCG Petty Officer Heidi Carlson, former Jeremy Ranch resident and 1999 Park City High School graduate, has, over the last four years, provided The Record with a series of features reflecting her time at sea aboard the -378-foot cutter Munro. Carlson completes her enlistment in mid-December and plans to start college after the first of the year at the new Utah Valley State College campus in Heber City. By Heidi Carlson YIM3 U.S. Coast Guard PART THREE: More adventures Friday morning dawned and I was already frustrated since this was our last liberty day in port and there would be more things to see and do than I would have time for. The massive tent was still set up on the flight deck where the banquet had been held the night before and our helicopter was rolled out for public display. There was a scheduled sched-uled tour to the local Volcano Museum as well as a trip to some geothermal hot springs. It should be noted that the volatile, 750-mile-long, Kamchatka Peninsula is one of the most volcanically active regions in the world. It is said that there are some hundred-plus volcanoes of which 29 are active. Being a typical American female, I elected to orego the trips and tours and instead go shopping with friends and ust get a feel for the town. Just as I was about to clear the area with my XX. J Y '7 i y v Proud Jeremy Ranch residents, Carol and Stu Carlson, welcome their daughter Heidi back from two months at sea during the Oct. 13, 2003 docking of the USCG Cutter Munro at Alameda Island, Calif. Naval tradition runs deep in the family as Stu is a former Marine Corps pilot and another daughter, Holly, is in the Navy Reserve in Salt lake City as a hospital corpsman. pals, the ship's executive officer Once again, I was in the wrong place assigned shipboard locations, all we snagged ' me with a paperwork request which he contended wouldn't would-n't take over 30 minutes. My friends were then nice enough to wait for me on the quarterdeck with only the minimum amount of expected groans. When I got my assignment completed, I headed back down to the female berthing quarters to grab some last minute items. That turned out to be a mistake. LOOK " FOR THE HOLIDAYS! , ... . . Our commanding officer, Captain Hurst suddenly announced over the ship's address system that there had just been an 8.1 earthquake to the southwest off Japan. Due to the potential threat of a tsunami or tidal wave, we needed to make immediate preparations for getting underway. You must also understand that at that moment about half of our crew was on liberty liber-ty ashore. Further, there was no way to get word to them that a tsunami might hit our exposed seaport. Understandably, they are pretty gun shy over the prospect of earthquake-generated earthquake-generated tidal waves in that part of the world. Past tsunamis in Alaska and Japan have reportedly caused terrible damage and killed many people. Accordingly, we all turned to and the on-board crew scurried about making preparations to possibly possi-bly cast off and get underway. Needless to say, excitement was high and I was on edge as were many of my friends. In short order, it was piped that we were to lay to in what is termed our General Emergency Positions. My position is in Damage Control Central but there were only two of us there instead of four. Once in our could do was sit tight and wait. After awhile, Captain Hurst piped that if a tsunami were to hit our locale, it should have been some two minutes ago. Phewww! How does the saying go? Prepare for the worst but hope for the best. In short order, he then announced that the tsunami alert was canceled and that non-duty personnel per-sonnel were free to go their way. When my party finally left the boat, there were more than a few good-natured comments on why everyone had to stay on the ship so long. Actually, everyone was pretty relieved. We'd had enough excitement excite-ment for one day. Next, we headed back to the bank in town but minus yesterday's transportation. This obviously was not to be our day. The same armed guard in the same dark and gloomy building advised us that the bank was closed. He then tried, in broken English, to tell us where another bank was located but his garbled directions, despite the intentions, were very confusing. From there, we headed downtown down-town to one of the shops which we'd visited the day before where a functioning func-tioning ATM was located.
