They come for the free coats and the chance to catch a glimpse of a star or better yet, strike up a conversation with one. Mostly, though, people volunteer vol-unteer at the Sundance Film Festival because they love the movies. Like the past few years, around 1,100 volunteers are a part Sundance 2002. About 70 percent come from outside of Utah - as far away as Sweden and Japan in some cases - a mix of first-timers and veterans to the festival. Sara Karl came to Park City for the 2000 festival as a visitor, she's back this year as a volunteer. volun-teer. An actress from Los Angeles, Karl says she's here for Ihe movies, the excitement, tecause things are happening. "It's also funny to see people from L.A. in the mountains," she says. Unlike some volunteers, Karl says she didn't come to Park City with a movie pitch or fantasies about making it big in Hollywood. Tess Lindberg, who is originally from Sweden and now studies i film in California, came because she heard "it was a happenin' place to be." She's volunteering full-time at the Egyptian Theatre. Michael Call, one of the volunteer vol-unteer coordinators for Sundance, says the attitude of most volunteers is like a child's at summer camp. "It's people who simply love film," he says "for a lot of them it's like a little vacation." More than 1,000 people volunteered for this year's independent film event. the festival - corralling all the volunteers, he says, making sure they know where they are going. At the volunteer headquarters inside the Shadow Ridge Hotel, a line of eager volunteers formed early on the opening morning of the festival. Inside a small hotel room transformed into an office volunteers waited for their orders. Some stood patiently in the bathroom. bath-room. "It's been like this for the past few years," says Tegan Bradford, assistant manager of volunteers at the festival, as she takes a look at the commotion inside volunteer headquarters. She says that once the festival gets rolling, she'll find the time to catch a few movies - like so many of the others, it's one of the main reasons she made the trip from Los Angeles. 11 r1 ; Si'j -'-- !-. Kris says crowd control is probably prob-ably the biggest component of her job. "It's a logistical nightmare," she says, "1,100 people trying to get out of trie theater the same time 1,100 are trying to get in." The work isn't glamorous. Kris says a big part of her job is telling people politely that they cant bring soda or food into the theater. the-ater. One time, without really looking look-ing at who she was talking to, she told Alec Baldwin he was going to have to leave his Pepsi behind or else he wouldn't be allowed in the Eccles.
