'1 -i Drive defensively and reduce insurance rates The Utah Safety Council is now offering four-hour defensive driving courses for people in the Salt Lake City area. The courses are held throughout each month, at the Cedar Park Business Complex in Murray. Each four-hour course consists of classroom instruction and focuses on accident prevention, driving confidence, con-fidence, awareness of hazards and improving driving skills. Drivers who successfully com plete the course receive a 50-point reduction from their Utah driving record, once during a three-year period. Individuals 55 years of age and older, may qualify for insurance discounts after completing the course. Registration is $25 per person, or $8 for those age 55 or only desiring desir-ing a reduction in their insurance rates. For further information, please contact the Utah Safety Council at (801) 262-5400, ext. 305. As to sheer guts, the U.S. bobsled team has nothing on the riders of the "schooner" sled that once hurtled down the streets of Pleasant Grove. Sledding on the town's icy streets had long been a wild and well-loved sport. But when Alma and Pete Christiansen built an 18-inch-high supersled -- one that would hold 15 to 20 people - they took the sport to new heights. On cold winter nights during the 1920s, scores of people would leave their heated homes to watch - or ride - the schooners. Sometimes, two schooners would race. Sometimes one of the unwieldy sleds would crash, flinging its riders into soft snow banks if they were lucky, or into rougher terrain (and doctors' offices) if they were not. Sledding was not for the fainthearted, faint-hearted, but sleds and schooners were only a part of the winter thrills that residents pursued m this small Utah town. r You can read more in a special spe-cial winter sports issue of tfip Utah Historical Quarterly, jCrst off the press. The Quarterly, a perfect cor3-plement cor3-plement to the coming Olympic, also tells tales of the daredevil Norwegian ski jumpers who, during dur-ing the Depression, competed oil hills near Ogden and Park Cit It describes the ski hujs tucked away in Utah's mountains moun-tains and the free-spirited skiers who loved and used these cabins. Finally, it tells about the coming of the ski industry to thjs depressed mining town of Park City -- and how expectations played out in reality. The .
