A quiet epidemic With the New Year, we always think about resolutions, or goals. What do we want to accomplish, become or obtain in the 365 days that we have in front of us? One of the most popular New Year's resolutions is to lose weight. We all know the media shows, generally speaking, that a person is attractive and beautiful beau-tiful if he or she is a certain size (usually for women it's size four). Reality and surveys have shown that the average women in the United States is size 14. Wow! That's a difference of 10 sizes, and with that, the desire to lose pounds never ends. One thing that concerns me and many others oth-ers is that there is a serious and quiet epidemic epidem-ic that is attacking our children, all over the U.S. - the epidemic of obesity. In white chil- , dren, 20 to 22 percent are obese, while in Hispanic children the percentage is 27 to 33 percent. The causes of obesity are: Our children are watching TV, playing Nintendo and on the computers more than ever. They spend an average of three to four hours a day watching TV, or 21 hours per week. There is a lack of physical activity. We are not doing enough with our muscles -- and we are teaching our children to lose muscle and gain fat every time we buy them a new video game. We are eating more and more in fast-food restaurants, and super-sizing. We are eating more calories that we need to maintain our weight. We are enjoying bigger portions, por-tions, when in reality, they are stretching our stomachs and making mak-ing us eat more. As a society, we are drinking drink-ing more sodas than water or milk. When you or your children are overweight, you may suffer mm some of these ncreased possibilities of having heart disease; developing high blood pressure; a higher risk of cancer; fatigue; depression; arthritis; and diabetes. These possible consequences from being overweight are not healthy. One of the major health threats is the early development of Type 2 diabetes, in children and young adolescents, adoles-cents, that can lead to heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, limb amputations and blindness. blind-ness. The important thing to know is that obesity obe-sity and diabetes can be prevented in most cases. What can we do for our children and ourselves? our-selves? First of all, let's not be ascouch pota-toes.ae pota-toes.ae Let's watch less TV and control how many video games the children play. Let's have more physical activity. Walking is a very beneficial bene-ficial exercise that we have almost eliminated from our society, because we go in the car everywhere even for very short distances. Let's eat the five servings of fruits and vegetables vegeta-bles each day and drink more water and milk and less soda pop. Provide your children the opportunity to participate in sports or physical events that will give them exercise as well as a fun time. How about dancing? In our countries of origin, we usually dance more than here in the United States. Let's keep that custom alive. You can dance with your children for half an hour. Take your sweetheart dancing --the --the children will see your example and hopefully hope-fully learn from it. This is actually what people do in aerobics classes at health clubs. They go and dance as a group in front of a mirror. It's healthy and gives you energy. This New Year, let's make thetresolution that we will somehow stop this quiet epidemic that is attacking our families. After alk itfciin our hands and our control.
