Show Saturday, Kay 13, 2000 The Perk Record k-7 Eye mi the amei S ;i by Frank Bell I 'f! Movingdirt nj As you may have noticed, it is construction season agaiu in Park Qty. Not only will there be bridge and road construction, transit center cen-ter construction, paving and utility work, there will be some work done at our local Olympic venues. Not to worry, however (unless you are a worm or a pot gut), - most of the local Olympic work this season will be moving dirt around. At Snow Park in Deer Valley, the earth began moviag last year in preparation for the construction construc-tion of the Olympic grandstands slightly up bill from the top of the beginners lift. The dirt platform (actually, it looks more like a mesa), started last year, will be completed this summer so that temporary footings and the grandstands can be built in the months prior to the Games. It shouldnt disrupt anything, any-thing, but it wiU be quite noticeable if you attend any of the summer concerts. In fact, it might be fun to roll things down on people in the last row think of it as a penalty for befog late to the symphony. At Park City Mountain Resort, the earth will move as the Eagle Race Arena gets rc -configured to fit the Olympic events. Grandstands to accommodate about 10,000 people will be built there as well and you can expect some minor relocations of lift towers. tow-ers. The planning commission is considering PCMR's application to construct a "timing building" adjacent adja-cent to the race arena which wiU serve as just that during the Games. It will also be big enough to house some offices for future use. It's the only permanent faculty that will be constructed at either venue. Unless you happen to be strolling along the lower slopes or the ski school area, you probably won even notice the development of this project Next summer, and even more in the fau, serious construction work wiii begin on the temporary facilities facili-ties at both venues culminating in the arrival of lots of tents and trailers trail-ers for the compound and support ; facilities adjacent to the competi tion sites. None of this stuff will stay around long, but between the summer cf 2001 and the spring of notice Olympic con- striRaHrtHifl ttafefig actfttfy. both resorts. It is important for the public to understand that SLOC will be held to the same building and occupancy occupan-cy standards applicable to anyone pass, the lots will be pulled up after the Games and the land replanted. It may take awhile for re-vegetation, but such is the price for fame. Our standards stan-dards will not be relaxed just because the Olympics are in town." Frank Dell oy mil eke. They have willingly agreed to that, and to go through permitting processes whenever necessary under our ordinances. Permanent and temporary facilities alike will be subject to code compliance and inspections. Our standards will not be relaxed just because the Olympics are in town. Park City and SLOC have agreed to err on the side of doing things right to help ensure the safety and welfare of our Olympic visitors. However, that is not to say that our venues wont look a little like a Rock Springs, Wyo., trailer park on a carnival weekend when all this stuff gets into town. We normally donl allow things that look and act like trailers here, but events are different. dif-ferent. We can stand anything for a few weeks. Having seen these trailers trail-ers at other events, they already fit our historic motif most are brown, gray, or other "earth tones", are propped up on blocks and are poorly insulated. One could make the argument that there isn't much difference between an Olympic event trailer and a miners shack. Other dirt-moving projects will include construction on the two satellite parking lots. Some work has already started on the S R. 224 lot in conjunction with the new road to the Winter Sports Park, but it wont be long before serious dirt is moved around to prepare this lot and its partner on U.S. 40 near the Justice Center. Neither of these projects should be confused with something attractive. There isn't much you can do to make a parking lot attractive under the best of ar- venue development, the Olympics have been the contractors' and construction con-struction workers full employment act for several years: the 1-15 project, pro-ject, the two new 1-80 interchanges in Summit County, the new roads to the Winter Sports Park and Snow Basin, the Salt Palace expansion, Oquirrh Park Speed Skating oval. Athletes Village at the University and the Little America Hotel. Unless new projects come along after the Games. Utah could see a dramatic exodus of the construction construc-tion industry which could lead to changes in the states economy. The construction industry has invested heavily in the state because of the Games. Tax revenues, rev-enues, real estate investment, truck sales, and 7 Eleven stores may suffer dramatically after the Games. Seriously, if you are in a business catering to the construction construc-tion industry, you might want to give that some thought. Former Park City Police Chief Frank Bell now serves as the city 's Director of Olympic Planning and Special Events.
