When Slamdance first appeared, we were skeptical. The renecade festival's organizers were seen as opportunists oppor-tunists trying to cash in on the Sundance Film Festival's hard-won reputation. As a result, the event was given the kind of welcome we normally reserve for distant cousins who turn into insta-bud-dies as soon as they learn we live in ski country. Slamdance. however, was persistent and is now recognized as a legitimate venue for up-and-coming filmmakers. In retrospect, the advent of Slamdance (along with a growing list of film festy cousins) was a tribute trib-ute to Sundance and its subsequent success is a healthy part of the "independent'' process. Let's face it. Not only have Sundance tickets become scarce, chances of having one's dramatic or documentary entry accepted for screening at the festival have become about as rare as an encounter with the Publishers Clearinghouse Prize Patrol. Over the wars, competition for recognition at the Sundance Film festival has become so fierce that the line between jockeying for position at Sundance and in the mainstream' marketplace had becun to blur. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A valiant effort I ditor: On Tuesday. Jan. 11. we lost our good ttienJs Gteg and Loren Mackay in the avalanche iust outside of The Canyons. As tragic as this was. we were truly impressed by the responsiveness and efforts of the Summit County Sheriffs Department, the search and rescue team numbers (both human and canine), all of ihe personnel at The Canyons and. of course, by those who actually recovered i he bodies. Many of you were involved from the erv beginning, starting at midnight Tuesday and working straight through until late afternoon on Wednesday. Some of you put yourselves at peril Some of you tned to prevent this mishap. All of you tried to make a bad situation better, and we greatly appreciate your efforts. Some of you may feel that, because of the outcome, your efforts were not good enough: that more could or should have been done. We understand that no gieater effort could have been made by anyone, and that no one could have prevented pre-vented this incident or changed the outcome out-come ... , A special. wojJ needs tabe said about the executive management ' at The Canyons Both Les Otten and Blaise Carrig displayed a level of class and character char-acter that is rarely seen. From the very tirsi elforts. all the way through meeting with family and friends immediately after the results were confirmed. Les and Blaise were instrumental in providing inhumation, coordination and comfort. I found this article very offensive, having hav-ing had my first child as a single teenager. teenag-er. When 1 became pregnant 1 was told by numerous people that 1 would never make anything of my life. I would live on welfare and I would never get married because no man would want to marry someone with a child. 1 think this article did nothing but put down the two students stu-dents involved in this situation, which is the worst thing that can be done at a time like this. To say that this has ruined their chances of having a progressively better life and being able to do great things with their lives by having a child before they are ready is absolutely absurd. I am in no way advocating that teenage pregnancy is Ok. because it is the hatdest thing I've ever had to experience. I wouldn't want A Pa 4 MAAAMlJ rUI II IV? I CUUI U Asked at Snow Park Lodge, Deer Valley Resort Is the film industry acting responsibly when it comes to sex and violence . Katie Ckiltoa California "Not at all. They place loo much " emphasis on violence and sensationalism." for us Enter Slamdance with a handful of hotel rooms and gerry-rigged movie screens, the off-off-Broadway version of Sundance, with less baggage and cheaper tickets. And it found a niche. Slamdance has offered scores of new filmmakers filmmak-ers at chance to share their vision -- 2.500 submitted submit-ted entries this year. And it has given independent film buffs another opportunity to step out of the mainstream. Part of the excitement of attending a Sundance screening during the early years, was the sense of discovery but now that Sundance receives so much advance publicity, it is a lot like getting a ticket to the newest Star Wars episode. Buying a Slamdance ticket however, allows the viewer to experience that old sense of adventure. Acceptance by Sundance is still the golden ring for independent filmmakers, but Slamdance and others who are trying to share some of the glory this week, are performing a vital service in bridging bridg-ing the gap between artistic merit and commercial viability. It is time to acknowledge that there is plenty i t room on the dance floor for both Slamdance and Sundance. And for the next week we plan to learn as many new steps as we can. anyone to have to go through the put downs and struggles that I went through. But somehow I survived and have a beautiful nine-year-old daughter. I am one. who according to this article, would be considered a minority. Let's give the couple credit for putting up with the uneducated comments that are made by people like Justin Blake. Maybe part of the reason they're in this situation is because of low self-esteem Do we need to make it worse? Sincerelv. Jennifer Strader In time of grief Editor: We came to Park City from W ashington State Saturday night, leaving again Monday afternoon. We were overwhelmed over-whelmed with grief for the loss of our cousins. Greg and Loren Mackay. and we want to express our thanks to all who contributed donations in many forms: lodging for the family., prepared food, ptewnce at-jjw memorial You can all be proud of the1 community you live in. The kind of support we received shows that people care deeply about each other. We will not forget. Sincerelv. Bruce and Marie Tracy, Omak. W ash. An open letter to the county Dear Commissioners and County Attorney . It is unfortunate that you would deny my public comment at yesterday's commission com-mission meeting (Jan. 18). What comments com-ments and threat could a housewife and mother have that you could not afford me a few minutes of your time? If you would have afforded me this courtesy, this is what 1 would have said. Representing the Pine Meadow full-time full-time residents. I have been the one extending the olive branch in hopes of finding an amiable compromise with the Pine Meadow Homeowners Association. Since August of 1999. 1 have patiently sat through countless homeowners and commissioners com-missioners meetings and have come to understand that interest and authority should be aligned. This became apparent to me at a Pine Meadow homeowners meeting, while discussing winter access and the parking problems associated with plowing. At the end of the meeting. Scott Boyle, president of the homeowners association crossed his arms and announced that he had sold his snowmobiles snowmo-biles and would not be coming up to the ranch this winter. I want my water service to be resumed By leaving the water on until Dee . you have set a precedent and have proven to me that the Pine Meadow water system is capable of running ye.tr-round. ye.tr-round. Why? Because what differences are there in conditions and weather between Dec. ?1 and Jan. 31 or Mauh ! .' None. I am at a loss to see where all this money has been spent over the years, when we have the poorest infrastructure of any special service ser-vice district in the state.
