Show Saturday, January 4, 1996 The Park Record A-13 The Punk Rms$l TmmM The lure of the South Pacific by Bev Sincock RECORD GUEST WRITER For years I had been fascinated by the mystical beauty and culture of the South Pacific Islands. The image of the Tahitian Islands, the lush green landscapes, the craggy mountains and beautiful multi-blue multi-blue shades of its waters were of great interest to me. Captain Bligh sailing to the shores over 200 years ago, recaptured in the story of Mutiny on the Bounty, was a memory mem-ory that I had held for many years until I finally had the opportunity to travel there... twice in one year. The first trip was by land, the other was by sea. Both were so different and each were so wonderful. The first trip I flew from island to island, rented cars and traveled the islands. The second trip we went on a Wind Song cruise viewing view-ing the islands from sea and then exploring them by day. To say one was better than the other would be wrong; they were just different. What could be more romantic and exciting than discovering the islands of Polynesia from the deck of a sailing ship? The luxurious Wind Song, a 440-foot, four-masted sailing cruise ship with only a 163 passengers, combines the excitement of voyaging under sail with all the modern comforts expected on a state-of-the-art cruise ship. I have cruised a lot, but sailing around the Tahitian Islands in such a unique, small-scale ship was breathtaking. Only two-and-a-half hours beyond Hawaii and yet a world apart, Tahiti is located in the South Pacific half way between California and Australia. Air travel trav-el from Los Angeles is an easy six-and-a-half hour, non-stop flight. The Tahitian Islands are made up of six Islands plus atolls. The largest island is Tahiti, where you find Papeette, the only real "city" in Tahiti. Most tourists use this island as a transit point to the other islands. You may want to spend a night in Papeette on your return from other islands or the cruise ship in order to make flight connections. Less than 10 minutes away from Tahiti (or half an hour by ferry) are the deep spectacular bays and white sand beaches of MooredpOnty'40 miles wound the island, it can easily be circled by rental car, motorbike or bicycle for the more adventurous. Enjoy horseback riding along the beach or the interior, hiking up to a hidden hid-den waterfall or a visit to Belvedere view point. Maybe you will be lucky enough to smell the vanilla beans drying out on the front yards as you round one of the bends on your tour of the island. I still remember that wonderful aroma So much has been written about Bora Bora that it's hard to describe its magic in the little space we have. The view of the island from the window of an Air Tahiti flight has been compared to that of a "tiny emerald emer-ald in a setting of turquoise, encircled encir-cled by a protective protec-tive necklace of sparkling pearls." The airport is built on a palm-fringed palm-fringed motu (a reef surrounding most of the pj islands), approximately approxi-mately 20 minutes min-utes by motor launch from the main village of Vaitape. The view of the main island from the motu is truly spectacular, and as you travel across it you'll soon discover why Bora Bora's world-famous lagoon is the center cen-ter of interest for most visitors to the island. photo courtesy of bev sincock Activities include Only two-and-a-half hours from Hawaii and yet a world apart, the Tahitian island tours, islands arejocated in the crystal blue waters of the South Pacific. t! i a s s - u o i i o in world to experience a arm dive in Sam's Electric Service "For all your electrical needs" ...reminds you it's not too late to luit trace your roofs and gutters. Huahine is a lush tropical island with gentle rolling hills arid verdant foliage and a center for agriculture. Everywhere you look there are plantations of taro, coffee, cof-fee, vanilla or melons. Raiatea. the ancient religious and cultural center of Polynesia, is second only to Tahiti in size. It !is fhe 'administrative and trading center of the Leeward islands. Along with her sister island of Tahaa they have become one of the top locations for sailing, deep sea fishing and scuba diving. The Tahitian Atolls have become famous for their unsurpassed unsur-passed snorkeling and scuba diving. div-ing. Professional and amateur divers come from around the the pass between open ocean and deep lagoon. A combination of sailing the islands, whether it is on your own chartered boat or the Wind Song or Club Med sailing ships, plus a four- or five-day stay on your favorite island, is a great way to experience Tahiti. The hotels vary from deluxe over-the-water bungalows, to very budget hotels. Seven-day, air and hotel packages are available from about $1,000 per person.
