HOW THE TIGER GOT ITS STRIPES by Chad Carroll Once the big tiger named Nela was walking in a herd of white tigers. All of a sudden a brown zebra ran right past the herd and the big tiger. Yup, the zebra ran right past Nela, too. She was so fast she pulled the stripes and the color white right off Nela and onto the zebra. That's how the zebra got white with black stripes and the tiger got orange with black stripes. The tiger was orange under its white coat. The stripes were so dark they stuck to the tiger's body except for the outer coat which the zebra got. THE TALE OF SAD ENDINGS by Ingrid Wieser This story is about a girl named Maranda, no one important. She was about 10 years old, who lived with her mom and dad. One day she was walking to school when she saw Cody Cutter, the meanest kid in school. Maranda saw him throw a piece of paper out of his pocket. He littered, she thought to herself. Maranda hated even the word "litter." She didn't want to tell him to pick it up, so she just picked it up and put it in the trash. When Maranda came home, her mother told her she was going to have a baby. Maranda said, "Is it a boy?" Her mother said "Yes." Maranda leaped for joy. (She had always wanted a baby brother.) The next day her mother found out she was going to have the baby Dec. 2. Maranda was very excited, that was in a little while. The days passed by slowly but surely. On the day the baby was bom, Maranda came home and found that no one was home. She found a note in the kitchen. It said "Maranda, I went to the hospital to see Mom. Love, Dad." Maranda was very upset. She wanted to go too! In a few hours her dad came home. "Where's Mom?" she asked. He said "Oh, Mom will come home tomorrow." The next day when she came home, she found her mom, but she didn't find the baby. Her mother immediately said, "You will see the baby tomorrow at the hospital." The next day seemed very long, but she finally got home from school. She went with her dad to see the baby. When they got there a nurse told them room 1 1. So they to room 1 1 and she looked in. There were not many babies. Her dad showed her which baby was theirs. Maranda said, "What's his name?" He dad said, "Bryan." Then Maranda saw him. He had cancer. Maranda saw the word cancer on his crib. She was so mad she couldn't stand it, so they went home. "Is he going to be OK?" Maranda asked her mom. "I don't know, he's not doing too well." Maranda went to school the next moming with her head down. She didn't even notice Cody Cutter throwing trash on the ground. At lunch, Maranda didn't eat anything. She was thinking of what her mom said. "If this baby doesn't do well, you might be an only child." Maranda would love to have a baby brother, but not to be an only child! For the rest of the day, Maranda hardly spoke once. A month later Bryan did die. Maranda stayed home from school for a few days, then went back to school. Every night her dad would go out somewhere when her mom was asleep. So one night, we went to the very back of the car and hid. Then her dad would drive into town. He parked in front of a place called Springfields Bar. Maranda was stunned. Her father was drinking! Luckily he drove safely home. A few months later, that bar caught on fire and her father died too. Now she was living only with her mom. Her mom said she wasn't going to marry again. HISTORIC It was fun living just with her mom she decided. It was about next year, and Maranda had just turned 14. One day Maranda went for a walk down to the railroad station. She looked at the sign. It said "Trains Off Duty." So she went and walked on the tracks. "Maranda got new shoes for her birthday that were very complicated.) Then one of her boots got stuck in the skinny part of the railroad. She tried to put it our, but that didn't work. She tried unlacing all of those laces. Then all of a sudden, a train came out of the tunnel. No one ever knew what happened to Maranda's mom. Most people say she is still living in that house. Of course, she might be dead, because many years have passed. THE KING'S DEATH by Aaron Pressey Once there was a brave knight named Aaron. He was very strong and very smart. "Aaron!" his wife called "There's a rat in the house." He took the rat outside. One day he had to save his wife from the wicked king. The king kidnapped her because she was very smart. She didn't even have to hear a whole math problem to know what ibc answer was. The king was almost 97 years old. Aaron put on a Halloween costume, traveled to the castle, and scared the king to death. That day, the king died from a heart attack. Aaron searched the castle for his wife. He found her in the torture chamber. Spikes were just about to dig into her. Aaron ran, jumped and threw his sword just in the nick of time to stop the torture spikes. He rescued his wife, took out the sword and put it in its sheath. One day Aaron was very ill, because he had swallowed a stink bug when he was yawning in the morning. His wife took him to the doctor where he was given medicine. His wife stayed home with him while he rested. After awhile, he MERCHANTS' ASSOCIATION PRESENTS 12TH ANNUAL 6 Surprises! SIDEWALK SALE AUGUST 11 12 FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY PARKCITYj UTAH- 13 was OK, but he still had side effects. He still felt really dizzy, got sick to his stomach, and had headaches. He learned to deal with them, but they still hurt. One night somebody came into the cottage and took his wife. The intruder took her to the lake, threw her in, and drowned her. The killer threw her in because he was the king's best friend. He didn't dare go after Aaron, because Aaron had destroyed many dragons. Aaron discovered who the killer was because he had seen him running from their house. He wasn't able to catch him. Aaron snuck into the killer's house the next night and murdered all of the family members in the home. Aaron went to the lake where his wife had died. He sat and though, looked deep in the lake and saw a shadow of a person. His wife came out, frozen half to death. Aaron took her home, built a fire and thawed her out. She turned out OK, and they lived happily ever after. PERSONAL NARRATIVE by Brandon Fendt Last year I took baseball. I had the worst team the year before, but practiced at everything. Batting was bad. I never hit the ball! But there was that one time I got to walk to base. Now after all that pitching and catching, I guess you could say I wasn't any good at all, but finally I had done something! We lost anyway. Well, it was practice again. Now we had a new pitcher. It was a mechanical pitcher. It was now my turn. I was scared. I dove out of the way then after five times, I hit the ball! It was the game. I was lucky to hit the ball during the last few minutes of the game. I ran as fast as I could. Yes the practice was paying off. I didn't know the rules very well, but it was over! I was a pro! The coach said "slide." I dove. We won by one point. Yes, the scoreboard doesn't lie! We won! Which Stocks Will Outperform The S&P 500 Over The Next 12 Months?
