Librarians to gather for training Lucy Murphy, Librarian at the Snyderville Branch of the Summit County Library, wjll gather with 30 other public librarians for the annual Certification Training program of UPLIFT, Utah Public Library Institute for Training, to be held at the Salt Lake Community College, Aug. 14-16. 14-16. This year's course, Basic Reference, will be taught by Diane Slater, senior reference librarian and system administrator adminis-trator at Provo City Library. Slater has extensive experience experi-ence in reference services not only in public libraries, but academic libraries and has also instructed library staff members in reference services, ser-vices, including electronic resources and the Internet. Librarians completing the four course curriculum over a 4-6 year period fulfill the personnel,, per-sonnel,, standard of the State Library Division's Upgrade Process. The other three courses cours-es offered in successive years are cataloging, administration and collection development. When the library complies with all of the standards, it qualifies for a State Library Development Grant award each year. Certification Training, along with the Professional Skills Institute will be held this year at the Salt Lake Hilton on Aug. 17. Annual library trustee workshops and Practicum awards are provided provid-ed by the Federal Library Services and Construction Act. These programs are developed to train public librarians and board members in the state's smaller, rural i communities to manage library services and collections collec-tions effectively. All in all, Cunningham said he would like to return to the ancient city someday. Currently he is undecided what his major will be, but he is leaning toward a degree in history.
