The bellows of the donkeys could be heard echoing through the mountains as they hauled the heavy loads of coffee up and down the mountainside. Small, but worth the hike. In business almost 18 years, the founders, Carolee Hoffman and her brother Don, still have the enthusiasm that made the gallery the success it has enjoyed. The Hoffmans found that by carefully screening the 12 to 15 artists they represent, this permitted them to develop a clientele that returns year after year to add to their personal collections. The paintings on the gallery wall and the scultpure pieces displayed are easily and quickly classified as "traditional" no abstract expres-sionalism expres-sionalism here! My eyes were quickly focused on three paintings hanging in various areas of the gallery, all signed by the same artist, David Stewart. Upon graduating from the Art Students League in New York, he traveled trav-eled to Europe to study the masters in France, England, the Netherlands and Spain. Later, Central America, with its Mayan culture and art caught his inquisitive eye. Stewart then proceeded to travel to Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras to record what he observed in his mind and with his paint brush. Strangely enough, with this interest in European and Mayan art, his paintings reflect a rather Oriental touch. Not in his compositions or subject sub-ject matter, which is confirmed European, but rather in his technique and his application of paint and brush. It was this that caught my attention. The colors are rich, the texture heavy, and with the contrast between light and dark, you have an exceptional excep-tional painting. Examples of this are seen both in the "Sunflower" series and "David's Gift." sssf run , mrw1' mm-: WET L :'t X-Jr "Sunflower Series" PHOTOGRAPHY Unique Heirloom Quality Portraits of Children -1." That's what caught my eye. Interestingly, a recent photographer I reviewed at the Kimball Badami Gallery (Gary Grubb) had this to say about light. "Sometimes when the right light prevails, the subject is gone. Sometimes the subject remains but the proper light does not prevail but when light and subjects are brought together in complete harmony call it art," said Grubb. With this statement as a criteria, then both Stewart and Grubb are artists in the true sense. Walking back to downtown, I chose Swede Alley as my route. A short distance down, on the side of the road was a visual sight that made me want to weep an unfinished wall painting posing as a mural. Over a year ago, the Park City Arts Council joyously announced that their first piece of public art had been commissioned. The mural would be painted over the summer by Summit County artist Andrea Leichliter. With the second summer halfway over, the unfinished painting has not been touched since last fall. Early in the spring, I attempted to get information regarding the piece. The answer "the artist intends to start again soon." Standing in front of the painting, as I have a number of times before, I wonder how the painting could have been chosen to begin with. Park City has a strong and story-telling history. The miners, the loggers, log-gers, the fires, all contribute to a colorful, fascinating past. The unfinished unfin-ished piece appears designed and colored for a child's nursery. Whatever I think of the painting (1 have a hard time conceiving it as a i mural), the artist, by her lack of completion and commitment,' has shown , little respect for the organization that worked so hard to get this first project pro-ject underway. I sincerely hope that Fidelity Investments in Salt Lake City, who so graciously underwrote one third of the cost, will understand that this is the artist's problem, and will continue their interest in the arts. Having been deeply involved in this particular type of program in the past, I suggest that the Arts Council sit down, review future public arts and create a legal contract that spells out every aspect of the artist's commission.
