Show The Park Record D Section B Thursday, August 3, 1995 a Page B9 Riders in the Sky bring listeners unique world of cowboy music by LUKE SMITH Record staff writer For fans of good, old-fashioned music and humor, Red Butte Gardens was the place to be on July 30. On the lawn at the park Sunday evening, a good-sized crowd gathered to enjoy Riders in the Sky's unique style of cowboy music and humor. For starters. Red Butte Gardens has to be THE best site for a concert con-cert in northern Utah, and maybe anywhere, for that matter. Nestled in among the trees and flowers, with a stream flowing behind the stage, performers at Red Butte have little problem transporting the audience out of Salt Lake City and 1995 and off to a world of music and fun far from the struggles strug-gles of daily life. In the case of Riders in the Sky, that is the world of the cowboy. The trio is an island of simplicity in a sea of 'hype and malarkey. Simple instruments, no lights and a solid act still add up to almost two hours of fun. The trio, whose half-hour radio show appears on KRCL every Sunday at 5 p.m., is made up of Too Slim on the upright bass. Woody Paul, "the king of the cowboy fiddlers," and Ranger Doug, "the idol of American youth." Too Slim wore wooly chaps and Woody Paul had on Utah State Fair features big name entertainment The 1995 Utah State Fair has created two ticket packages which will allow fans to discover the "great old memories" of the "exciting new fair" and choose either five or six nights of fabulous live entertainment for one low price. Beginning Sept. 7, opening night kicks off with two performances by Columbia Record's Rick Trevino. The next evening, the fair continues with one of America's most successful musical groups the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band which currently performs on Liberty Records. The popular John Anderson's unique country sounds are featured on Sept. 9. Dan Seals (of England Dan and John Ford Coley fame) and Patriot Record's John Berry round out the first five nights of entertainment, entertain-ment, which the fair has organized into "package A." Music lovers can begin "package B" with top country music star Martina McBride, then move on to Atlantic Record's Confederate Railroad and the Bellamy Brothers. George Ducas, Toby Keith and Little River Band are the featured performers for the duration of the fair. The package tickets are also transferable, which makes the deal even better friends can share the cost and the enjoyment. Ticket information can be obtained by calling 538-STAR (538-7827). The stage accou-termcnts accou-termcnts consisted of a canteen hanging from a microphone stand and a red cellophane campfire with a light bulb inside it. Sound corny? Well if it is, I'm corny. I'm also a sucker for old-time old-time radio shows and cowboy movies, so Riders in the Sky is a natural mix for me. But the fact of the matter is. Riders in the Sky put on a great show. The musicianship was impeccable, the humor was a lot more sophisticated than one might expect (and more importantly, was quite funny) and thus, the evening was pure fun. Riders in the Sky started out their show with "Those Texas Plains" and went right into a humorous ditty about the birth of the yodel. Just four songs into the show it was time for an old classic "Tumblin' Tumbleweeds" followed by what Too Slim called "instrumental time in the cowboy bunkhouse." The instrumental featured fea-tured great solos by both Too Slim and Woody Paul. After Ranger Doug's "co-dependent dysfunctional love song" in Spanish which, he pointed out, came from the border country where he grew up the border between Wisconsin and Illinois the humor came out full-force in the form of an extended satire on &4 f ,'t- W''p Riders in the Sky entertain the modern country music. Featuring "Woody Paul Cyrus." the song was about Gunsmoke. Matt Dillon and Miss Kitty and in the middle of the song included the accurate and telling commentary: Q: "How do you tell one modern country song from another?" A: "Their titles are different." Riders iri the Sky played another anoth-er sort-of classic, the theme from "Rawhide," and then took questions ques-tions from the audience that ranged from "What are your last names?" to "Is Paul McCartney really dead?" The winning question ques-tion received an eight-track tape of the group. An intermission allowed for a quick walk among the gardens at Red Butte before Ranger Doug's yodeling brought the crowd back for the second set. A spoof of the old "Have Gun Will Travel" called "Palindrome." ("he gets 'em coming and going") in which the hero responds to the bad guy's every challenge with a phrase that is spelled the same both forward and backward, got the crowd up again and gave way to audience requests. Not surprisingly, the requests were all for classics: "Back in the Saddle Again." "Don't Fence Me In," "Ghost Riders in the Sky," "Pecos Bill." and "Cool Water." Photo by luke Smith crowd at Red Butte Gardens Of course. Riders in the Sky put their own spin on the songs, with "Back in the Saddle Again" being sung by the Fudds: Wynonna and Elmer. After another instrumental. "Varmint Dancing," in which Too Slim demonstrated each particular varmint's form of dancing, including includ-ing the South American three-toed sloth's dance it just hangs upside-down from the amplifier the show wrapped up with the quintessential cowboy goodbye song, "Happy Trails." A standing ovation brought the trio back for first, a story by Too Slim, rope tricks by Woody Paul and then two more songs before the crowd filtered out of Red Butte Gardens and back into the 20th century. As a fan of the Riders' Radio Theatre radio show, and of concerts con-certs at Red Butte Gardens, I found this concert to be a wonderful wonder-ful respite in the midst of a hot Utah summer. I'm a sucker for nostalgia, but Riders in the Sky goes beyond that simple level to help their fans enjoy themselves. The music would stand on its own in a concert. Throw in the laughs and the good times and you've got the recipe for "the cowboy way." At Red Butte Gardens, that's a great way indeed.
