Show I The Park Record D Section B Thursday, March 10, 1994 D Page B3 Park City by AMBER McKEE Record staff writer Park City scored high all arouni t in the fifth annual Best of Utah, ! published March 2 by the Private . Eye Weekly newspaper. The top .'awards for the Best Great Escape and Best Place for a First Date Zshould make the ChamberBureau : proud. "Park City is certainly a favorite "destination " Eye Editor and I Publisher John Saltas said March :$. s The number of people who respond to the survey questionaire : (which was published in three ! consecutive issues in January) is, : well, a lot. The Eye prefers the ! number to be "a loosely kept '. secret'' although Saltas did say it ! was in the moderate hundreds. "It's grown from a base of about : 250 to 300 the first time ouL..five : years ago," he said. ; Of the 140 categories, Park City ; scored high in nearly 50 of them. ;The following is a round-up of the ; reader's selections: Bear in mind only about 10 percent of the Private Eye's distribution is in ;Park City. This is Salt Lake's idea of what Park City is, and like the Private Eye disclaims, "as a staff. we honestly don't agree with all your selections.... (That must have been the second place award Salt Lake Mayor Deedee Corradini got for Best Thing To Happen To Your City.) Nightlife: First Place-Best Great Escape-The Escape-The Beverly Hills of Utah, this trendy little ski town can give the illusion of being outside the state while remaining inside. Not Aspen yet, but there are star sightings in the quaint little eateries and along the sidewalks where the tourists do the Main Street shuffle. Don't bother looking for Tony Danza on the ski runs. Date-You know you' re on the way to a great first date if you Campion s by MIKE STEPHENS Record guest writer The Piano Starring Holly Hunter, Haryey Keitel Directed by Jane Campion Once again a movie maker latches onto the oft-done biblical theme "Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's wife," with the warning label in this case, "You just might get her." Harvey Keitel plays the coveten a New Zealandcr gone slightly native, Maori. He has an instantaneous and abiding lust for his neighbor's newly arrived wife-to-be. She is prim, proper, perpetually up-tight and a bit quirky, having been struck dumb by a ' psychological trauma earlier. Her character, played by Holly Hunter, is rendered superfluous to the story as her muteness is circumvented by her signing young daughter. The -husband' tries his limited best to earn this title, but cannot even get to bat, so to speak, with his mute wife. 1 1 The movie is R' rated for its sex which is expressed pictorially, verbally and orally, but mostly verbally with the 'husband' , begging and the covetous neighbor whining. The 'husband' is ultimately driven to voyeurism and finally violence. But Keitel, the covetous one, figures it out The key to bedding the elusive mute is The Piano. Works better than a HersheyBar. ; Every couple of years or so I feel drawn to see a Cannes winner just to see if my own personal mass has gotten out of kilter. a pretty, great escape cross the conversation hurdle of Parley's Canyon. Then there's all that fun vacation feel and relaxed atmosphere to work with. Good food and wine loosens up the tongue and your Salt Lake City inhibitions. And finally, if things are going extremely well, there are plenty of hotel rooms available. Glad to see that Cannes and I are still the same distance apart B. Fink was a bad movie and The Piano follows. Cannes is consistent. This is a simple story of covetousness which has been loaded with excess baggage in a failed attempt to give it some depth and character. The Piano tries to be artsy. For example, the director utilizes very close-up shots of well- ipir Randali Carlisle, KTVX-A isi li u i ii I Hi ill u WARNER BROS, hunn talCONhoi.cn A MEL GIBSON Fu MELCIBS0N "THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE" MARGARETWHITTON FAYMASTERSON CABYHOFFMANN GEOFFREY LEWIS RICHARD MASUR noiocNICKSTAHL MiscComkkdBv JAMES HORNER Fim Eom TONY GIBBS, A.C.E. too Derail BARBARA DUNPHY Dntcrn Of Fnoracwm DONALD M.
