Show Park "itv V-ws Thtir.da, Dm-mlur 30, 1982 Pae ( 5 Park City Ski Area to host clinic for disabled skiers r Next week, the Park City Ski Area will be the site of a unique program which offers beginner ski instruction to people who have lost the use of one or more limbs. The program, which has already involved about 1,000 handicapped skiers nationwide, nation-wide, was started on the East Coast. This year it has been expanded to include Park City and Alpine Meadows, California. Sponsoring the four-day clinic will be the Southland Corporation, which operates 7-Eleven stores, and the 52 Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the disabled with a year-round "Confidence Through Sports" program. Directing the program will be Dave Flowler, an amputee am-putee himself. Flowler, now 33, stepped on a land mine in Vietnam in 1971. He was consigned con-signed to Valley Forge Army Hospital where the rehabilitation program included in-cluded skiing. He became an enthusiast and went on to be a member of an amputee demonstration team for many years. Today, he serves as director direc-tor of the 52 Association's amputee ski clinics. He is also the assistant golf pro at the Pocono Hershey Resort in White Haven, Pa. "I can't think of a better way for a person to get right back into the swing of things after losing a leg or an arm, or both for that matter, than to take up skiing," Fowler says. "There's something about skiing the slopes with the best of them that gives you the confidence to do just about anything else you want to do, too." Helping the handicapped master the sport of skiing are several pieces of special equipment: outriggers, poles with little skis on the end used for balance by amputees am-putees and cerebral palsy victims; ski bras, which help blind skiers by holding the tips of the skis together; and Arroyo sleds, resembling kayaks, which enable paraplegics to experience the trill of skiing. "With the aid of specially-designed specially-designed equipment, the physically disabled can master the art of skiing just as an able-bodied person can," says Joseph R. Aicher, president of the 52 Association. The association was formed for-med by a group of 52 New York business and civic years in the closing days of World War II. They incorporated incor-porated to help and befriend disabled veterans 52 weeks a year. Today, the 52 Association owns and operates a 41-acre recreational rehabilitatioOn center in Ossining, N.Y., which serves 4,000 disabled veterans from the metropolitan New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas. Since its inception, the 52 Association has broadened its efforts of offer all amputee, am-putee, paraplegic and blind persons civilians and veterans, children and adults confidence-building sports programs. The Park City amputee clinic is scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 3 and wind up with a regional race on Thursday, Jan. 6.
