The focus of the latest controversy con-troversy on the World Cup tour is the super giant slalom (or super G), which made its debut in December. "It's not for me," snarled Sweden's Ingemar Sten-mark, Sten-mark, who finished 74th in the most recent super G World Cup race, held Dec. 22 in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. "You can use strength in slalom and GS but you can't here. I won't ski it anymore and I do not see a future for this event. I don't think it is so interesting for spectators, TV or for me." "I do not understand why the skiers are boycotting the super G," Mair said. "I feel that everyone should ski it." Mair finished first. Stenmark joins the growing list of skiers who refuse to compete in the new event, a list which includes Phil and Steve Mahre of the U.S. Ski Team. "It's going to be interesting in-teresting to see the giant slalom seedings for next year," said Tom Kelly, U.S. slalom and giant slalom coach, referring to the fact that the super G races count toward World Cup giant slalom points. According to John Dakin, spokesman for the U.S. Ski Team the new event combines com-bines elements found in both downhill and giant slalom. However, it seems to be weighted in favor of the downhill specialists. Like downhill, it requires the use of longer skis. And like downhill, there is only one run. "The original idea was to give downhillers more opportunity op-portunity to score World Cup points," Dakin said. "Obviously, "Ob-viously, the downhillers have been very pleased." Obviously. A look at the latest World Cup standings (see Scoreboard) will show how the downhillers have been racking up the points so far this season. Not only are points given for individual super G results, but the first two men's super G races this season (one more is scheduled) have been used in conjunction with other races to give World Cup skiers "combined" points. In one case, the super G was combined with a downhill. "A lot of people don't see it as a valid event," Dakin said. Two super G races are also scheduled as part of the women's World Cup tour. Finishing behind Mair in the Dec. 22 race was Hans Enn of Austria in second, Pirmin Zurbriggen of Switzerland Swit-zerland in third, teammate Franz Heinzer in fourth, and Hubert Strolz of Austria in fifth. The top American was John Buxman, in 72nd position. The Madonna di Campiglio Cam-piglio super G was the final race of the year on the World Cup tour. The schedule will resume Jan. 4 with a slalom in Parpan, Switzerland. In other developments last week, U.S. Alpine Director Bill Marolt announced some changes in the Ski Team roster, reflecting the December races in Europe, the National Training Camp in Aspen and subsequent Elbert Series races in Vail and Winter Park. Joining Phil and Steve Mahre on the giant slalom and slalom team will be "B" team member John Buxman. Bux-man. The downhill team will be joined by "B" team member Steve Hegg, who came into his own in December Decem-ber after a disappointing fall. Other racers will include in-clude Mike Farny, Doug Powell, Jace Romick, Tris Cochrane, Andy Luhn, Andy Chambers, Doug Lewis, Mike Brown, Bill Johnson and Paul Mahre. On the women's team, Ab-bi Ab-bi Fisher will not return to Europe for the January races, after a long, illustrious career. Joining the team will be Eva Twar-dokens Twar-dokens of Reno, Nevada. Other racers will include Christin Cooper, Tamara McKinney, Maria Marichich, Cindy Nelson, Karen Lancaster, Heidi Preuss, Cindy Oak, Holly Flanders, Debbie Armstrong, Ar-mstrong, Rebecca Simning and Pam Fletcher. vj v vj II II i vv J A f f J ; If! fcr Sunday, Jan. 2, 1983, 1:00 p.m Registration Sat., Jan. 1 , 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Park City Race Department Ticket Windows.
