Less than a minute later, Strait got the puck again at almost exactly the same spot on the ice. Again he let go a slapshot toward the Snowbird goal. But this time Silver King forward Randy Lewis, playing his first game of the season in a Park City uniform, stepped in front of the shot and deflected it into the goal. The clock read 2:28. The Silver Kings tried desperately to tie the score, pulling their goalie in favor of a sixth attacker. But Snowbird managed to nullify the pressure, hanging on long enough to insure the one-goal victory. "I'm glad that for everybody who paid a buck, at least the last period was worth it," Park City spokesman Dick Beaufait said later. He didn't sound too disheartened by the loss. They had a man advantage on three occasions during the first period but could not sustain any pressure in the Snowbird zone. Goal-mouth passes by forward Mark Johnson set up two excellent scoring opportunities, but his teammates were unable to convert either one. With 3:50 left in the period Snowbird scored its first goal from a scramble in front of the net. The second goal came less than two minutes later as sloppy defensive play by the Silver Kings allowed a Snowbird forward to pick up the puck behind the Park City goal and pass it to a teammate who was standing alone in front. Snowbird was playing one man short at the time. Penalties played a factor in the third Snowbird goal as Park City's Tim Miller was whistled off with only 15 seconds played in the second period. Each team was playing one man short at the Mutcher If hird Period Surge time, and the penalty to Miller gave Snowbird a four-to-three advantage. Seven seconds later, Snowbird's Lyoness had made it 3-0. The body checks started to get more vigorous in the second period, and at 16-27 a fight erupted between Park City's Miller and Snowbird's Dahl. Both were thrown out of the game. The Silver Kings' Tom Kerian was penalized for delay of game at 13:10, and Snowbird made the score 4-0 about a minute later when a slapshot from the point was deflected past Park City goalie Bill Healy. But the Silver Kings finally broke the ice shortly after that as Kloek scored the first of his two goals. Assists went to Wilkomen and Smith. Neither team could score for the rest of the period, although Snowbird had a golden opportunity on a three-man breakaway. Healy came out of the park City net to cut down the angle and smothered a weak League Basketball pi j- Last week's results of the Park City Men's Basketball League are as follows: Sweetwater 68, P & C Trucking 65; Red Banjo 81, Prospector Square 53; Excitable Ex-citable Boys 55, Claim-jumper Claim-jumper 53. With 1:41 to play in the period, a minor altercation in the Snowbird zone resulted in two players from Park City but only one from Snowbird going to the penalty box. The Park City fans were furious, and communicated com-municated that displeasure to the officials. Beaufait explained ex-plained what happened next. "The officials were very discouraged with the Park City crowd," he said, in a bit of an understatement. "They asked me to go up there ( into the stands) and tell everybody to be quiet. They were going to give us a bench penalty because of the crowd." Beaufait told the officials he could not be held responsible respon-sible for the actions of the crowd, and they finally withdrew the threatened penalty. But they made no friends among the Park City supporters. Snowbird's fifth goal came with about five minutes played in the third period. At that point, Park City fans could legitimately have argued the dollar admission charge had been wasted. But the last-gasp comeback kept them all in their seats until the buzzer. Beaufait said the gate receipts covered the cost of renting the Salt Palace and paying the officials, with a surplus of about $20 for the general expenses of each team. The receipts were split down the middle, although Snowbird fans outnumbered out-numbered Park City's by aDout two-to-one. The Silver Kings' next game, a regular league encounter, en-counter, will be held Sunday, Feb. 24 at 7:45 p.m. at Hygeia Iceland in Sugar House. Beaufait indicated that a rematch exhibition with Snowbird was being considered for later in the season.
