Show Page 8 Thursday, February 21, 1980 Local ; Ying and Vo Houang have lived in Park City for three weeks now, staying at the home of Pat Carley, priest at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Park City. Ying, 18, has taken a job as maid with Moana, her brother Vo, 16, attends Park High School. But only a few months ago Ying and Vo were sharing the cargo hold of a 16-meter boat with 120 'boat people' fleeing their homes in Vietnam. Viet-nam. Halfway around the world from their temporary home with Father Carley, Ying and Vo had left behind the rest of their family mother, father and six brothers and sisters, i "The parish's idea for sponsoring refugee Vietnamese Viet-namese came last summer when the TV news was filled with films of the boat people," explained Father Carley. "We decided that, better than just lamenting the plight of the boat people at Mass, we should sponsor a refugee Vietnamese family." In September Father Carley contacted Catholic Charities to find out how his Park City parish could become sponsors. The charity program answered that two teenagers who fled Vietnam without the rest of their family were in need of sponsorship. Though sponsorship spon-sorship of just part of the family entailed assuming greater responsibility, the parishoners accepted the challenge and began dividing up the obligations of caring for the couple's needs. : "And then we waited," continued Father Carley. "There was no word about Ying and Vo for months, until un-til late January when Catholic Charities called that the couple would be at Salt Lake City airport in two days. The announcement was so sudden I was in a real panic." The Father also learned that Vo and Ying Jiad been raised Catholic and he wore his collar when he drove to the airport to pick them up. "I thought the collar would reassure them," he said. "It was touching to see this young brother and sister, neither of whom could speak a word of English, come off Howard A year-long investigation involving police in several western states ended Tuesday when Howard George Chick, also known as Anthony Ferrelli, was sentenced sen-tenced to the Utah State Prison by Third District Court Judge James Sawaya. Chick, a resident of Park City for a few weeks late in 1978, had been sought by Park City police as a suspect in the theft of an automobile, several thousand dollars worth of stereo equipment Complete Design Sertice Blinds Drapery Wall Criiig- 5 Most I Comprehensive 2 Selection Summit I County 5 S DINING ROOM SET g Complete Desijn SeriiceSlinis Drapery Wall Coiering- Church Helps Refugees the plane." Ying and Vo had made a long and potentially dangerous journey. Their school teacher parents are originally from Canton, which marked the Houang family as Chinese an ethnic group that has been singled out for persecution in Vietnam. Further, Ying and Vo were of draft age so if they were to escape the country, they had to do so soon. Two older brothers stayed behind to care for the mother and father and the younger children, one of whom was crippled by polio. Father Carley presumes that Ying and Vo, like other ethnic Chinese in Vietnam, were able only to leave their Saigon home by paying ransom ran-som in gold for space on a boat. Through drawings and broken English, the couple related that they spent 15 days on the open sea in a boat, in such crowded conditions con-ditions that they had to sleep sitting upright. They provided their own food, a small bundle of stores carried from home. The refugees disembarked in Hong Kong where Vo and Ying procured 12-hour shift jobs at a radio assembly plant. In the weeks they were in Hong Kong the two scraped together enough money to buy some clothes and purchase medicine, which was sent home where it could be sold for desperately needed money. "Though they have only been here three weeks, they can already converse in broken English," noted Father Carley, adding that he has been speaking so much Pidgin English lately that sometimes he answers the phone in it. "Both of them are very studious, they take ESL (English as a Second Language) classes in Salt Lake City. Ying does not want Vo to work because she would rather see him spend his time studying and. ' working on his English. Ying has finished high school, but wants to continue her education, so she works only three days a week to leave enough time for studying." The priest said the support of the community has been good: There have been Chick Grounded and some power tools. According to Park City Police Lieutenant Rob Berry, Chick left Utah late in December 1978, was traced to Fresno, Calif., then arrested in Las Vegas. Chick reportedly refused extradition ex-tradition to Utah, but was extradited to Fort Collins, Colo, to face charges there. For reasons that have never been fully explained to Park City police, Chick managed to avoid prosecution in Colorado but THE STr by Dee-Sign Associates 72" Table with two 14" leaves 6 side chairs 2 arm chairs Reg. $2200 Now S1499.95 numerous job offers extended exten-ded to the couple and the high school was especially helpful in placing Vo. "I was like a nervous parent when I took Vo to his first day of classes, but things turned out well, he likes the school." But Father Carley noted the couple's greatest ambition am-bition is to reunite the family. "Sometimes I see something some-thing trigger a remember-ance remember-ance of their home and they grow sad." Partly to keep them occupied oc-cupied and develop a sense of independence, the Father encourages Ying and Vo to venture out with friends. The two recently attended Chinese New Year Celebrations in Salt Lake City and last Sunday they returned home sore and tired from their first jaunt on cross-country skis. They have established friendships with other Vietnamese and Chinese living in Salt Lake City through Francis Lan, a friend of Father Carley who once lived in Saigon. They also keep in touch through letters with friends they met on the refugee boat; one friend lives in Montana, another in San Francisco. The two are catching on quickly to American customs, cus-toms, and humor. Father Carley laughingly relates how the two will break up at the antics of Tim Conway on TV, apparently understanding understan-ding the subleties of television gags even if they don't understand all the words. But the Father has learned a lot about the customs of ethnic Chinese, especially their deference to elders. "I can't stand up without them standing up also, they always want to make my coffee for me and Vo cooks great Chinese dinners," Father Carley said. "They're a delight, an in- stant family." " Asked if they Slike America, Ying and Vo quickly nodded their heads yes. "Very much," said Ying. Why, she was asked. "Because America is free," she said, then she looked at Father Carley and added, "And the people are very nice." was later picked up in Salt Lake City. Berry said Chick also was wanted in Idaho as a suspect in a fraud case. Park City police dropped a charge of auto theft after Chick agreed to plead guilty to the theft of stereo equipment equip-ment from the Yellow Slicker rooming house. He was given an indeterminate sentence of no less than one year and no more than 15 years in prison. 586 Main Street i 3 9 4 Jf : . ifm i' Vf I 9, 'If, is i I I Ov uk j, ta .sat ms teW m .-, :w 1 "mail" V .
