Show I ,mrmr Wednesday, March 29, 1978 Page 11 Telemark Report By Brown Boxing The World Boxing Council announced this past weekend that it had lifted the world heavyweight title from Ken Norton. Citing reasons that Norton Nor-ton had not defended the title since it was awarded awar-ded to him a week ago and that he had not changed his name to one of Black Muslim origin, the WBC felt thatlie did not project the image of a heavyweight champion. Shortly following the lifting of Norton's title, the WBC came out with another announcement, stating that "Non-Smoking" Abdul Fra-Zeer was the new world heavyweight' champion. Recognizing Fra-Zeer's vast fighting and acting experience, the WBC feels he best fills the ticket as the one who will lose the title back to its rightful right-ful owner "He" who floats like a butterball and stings like a flea. Ken Norton, of course, says he will sue. Tennis The big news in tennis this week is little Stacey Tossem's victory over Chris Evert in the $100,000 El Producto Panetell's Tournament played in El Segundo this past weekend. The seven-year-old superstar had little trouble in defeating the elderly Evert, winning in two sets, 6-0, 6-1. Some observers at the match thought that Miss Evert's complaints of extended delays due to repeated milk and cookie breaks plus a nap between bet-ween sets were unfounded. No one heard Miss Evert complain about the Darth Vader doll Miss Tossem carried throughout the match. When asked what she would do with her first-place first-place prize money, Miss Tossem was heard to say she hoped to put her parents through college. Briefly in men's tennis, Romania's Hie Nastase was forced to withdraw from a Davis Cup match after severely spraining the middle finger of his obscene gesture hand. It has not been determined when Nastase will return to the court. Baseball In major league baseball this week, it has been rumored that Charles O. Finley, owner of the Oakland A's, has found a new home for his major league franchise Park City, Utah. When asked to verify this rumor, Finley reportedly repor-tedly answered that he saw no reason why a town of 4,000 could not support a major league team, provided topnotch dog fights were held between innings rather than the usual mundane organ music. Foreseeing conflicts between the Park City Softball League and Finley's team over use of the field now located in Park City, Park City Councilman and Recreation Director Steve Dering has already put into motion a bond issue which would raise three million dollars for a new Softball stadium located in Deer Valley. The 1978 Deseret News Cup Citizen series came to a close last weekend in classic spring style under red klister and blue skies. Over 200 participants came out this season to enrich their souls with the pleasures and excitements ex-citements of ski racing. Be it a stroll on the golf course or a ride down Tnaynes Canyon, the memories linger on. Highlights would have to include the George Washington Tribute team relays and Nordic dual slalom as well as the Wasatch Mountain Overland, the Midnight ride and a fund-raising for Easter Seals. All annuals to be. Camaraderie developed through rivals within and throughout the different classes. In the MTU ' class there were six different winners in the ten-race ten-race series with no racer winning more than twice. In other classes, outcomes see-sawed between 72-year-old Ed Phelps and 10- and 11-year olds Craig Irvine and David Vanluven. The goal of the series was participation. Points were awarded to the top ten finishers in each class each race. Those accumulating the most points by the season's end would be classified as "winners." In reality, all who participated were winners. The list of people who "made" these events is endless a list that would include every participant par-ticipant for they are the essential ingredient. The Deseret News, W'olfe's and White Pine helped keep the ball rolling. The final round on the Park City Golf Course kept the odds changing up to pole time.
