Responding to the proliferation of real estate agents experienced by Park City in the past year, city officials of-ficials have hired a real estate agent control technician (REACT). The REACT has been instructed to impound any agent seen in public who is not within 25 feet of his or her broker. Mayor Jack Beige expressed ex-pressed regret that the technician had to be hired but said the move was necessary. "We don't like having to do this," Beige said Monday. "We know how fond brokers are of their agents but they are going to have to learn to restrain them if they let them outside." "City Hall has received numerous complaints Irom tourists who say they are being accosted on the streets by free-roaming agents," Beige continued. "We even had one case where a fellow from Chicago said he was bitten during an earnest money dispute." Brokers and agents have sent up a howl of protest over the city action, saying their right to do business is being infringed upon. "They're barking up the wrong tree if they think this is going to solve the problem," said one agent. "They'll never hound me out of town with this policy of harrassment." Another agent, recently released from the REACT pound, complained bitterly of the substandard conditions con-ditions there. "You wouldn't believe the type of agents I was thrown in with," he said. "They had the poorest listings I've ever seen." One broker said the reason he started his business in Park City was the mountain setting and the wide open spaces. "I came here thinking this would be a good place to train my agents," he revealed. "This appeared to be the perfect setting for them to sniff out leads and track down customers. But now I have to go out with them every time or I'm afraid they won't come back." "Then they begin fighting among themselves." Lott says her job is a thankless one because no broker can understand why his or her agent has been taken to the pound. "It's always the other broker's agent that's causing the problem," she remarked. "But I like my job because I like real estate agents. When I take them in, it's for their own good. They learn that they can't go around shoving contracts in everyone's face. Once they've had this paper training, it's a better situation for all concerned." 3 PHOTOGRAPHY VINNIE FISH MAEDEL'S Sales and Service BODY SHOP Insurance Estimates KilbyRd.
