Utah loll Kav !-SH8-81V"(F() AF Symphony to perform Mozart, Berlioz The American Fork Symphony will feature three well-loved works by the famous composers Mozart and Berlioz and a lesser known composer, Ippolitov Ivanov when they present "Classy Classics" Monday, Feb. 23 at the American Fork Junior High Auditorium, 1 120 N. 20 West at 7:30 p.m. The Anie ican Fork Symphony is conducted by Dr. Gordon Childs and assistant conductor Diane S o e 1 b e r g . Admission is a suggested $2 donation. The sympho Dr. Childs ny orchestra is sponsored by the American Fork Arts Council and members mem-bers are from throughout Utah Valley. The symphony will perform "Hungarian March, Op. 24" by Hector Berlioz; "Symphony No. 40 in G minor" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; and "Cascasian Sketches, Op. 10" by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov. Hector Berlioz lived in Paris in the first half of the 19th century cen-tury and envisioned musical performances on a vast scale, writing pieces for symphony orchestras with hundreds of members and choirs of a thousand thou-sand voices. In his dramatic legend for solo voices, chorus and orchestra, orches-tra, "The Damnation of Faust," he uses an orchestral version of a Hungarian March, explaining, explain-ing, "The theme of this march, which I have set for orchestra and developed, is celebrated in Hungary and known by the name of the Rakoczy March; it is of ancient origin, and the composer is unknown. It is the Hungarian War Song." Three years before his untimely death at age 35, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote three mighty symphonies sym-phonies in the space of six weeks. The middle symphony in the key of G minor "accurately defines the range of passion comprehended in terms of Mozart's art " according to the eminent historian Donald Francis Tovey. Mozart's Symphony in G minor is one of the greatest of all "classical" symphonies of the 18th century. Music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries told stories sto-ries of described thing. Such is the Russian composer Mikhail Ippolotov-Ivanov's "Caucasian Sketches." A student of Rimsky-Korsakov in St. Petersburg, Ippolitov-Ivanov's music is highly colored by nationalistic themes and harmonies. har-monies. The orchestra will perform three of the four sketches: "In the Mountain Pass," "In the Village," and the "Procession of the Sardar." The performance is a family oriented event but young children chil-dren may become a bit restless, so use your good judgement and come join us for an evening of really "classy" entertainment. entertain-ment.
