PG to offer 3-on-3 basketball league j The Pleasant Grove Parks and '' Recreation Department is again : ( offering a 3-on-3 basketball league for players 16 and older. . It is planned for the league to run from Sept. 11 to Nov. 29. ' v An organizational meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Recreation Center Multipurpose Room, 41 E. 200 Pleasant Grove. Gary Thornton and Raychellene Jasper of Lindon will leave this week to participate in the National Hershey Track and Field Meet in Hershey, Pa. this weekend. Gary will be a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team and Raychellene Raych-ellene will participate in the standing stand-ing long jump. Both won on the city, region, and state level. Their scores were then compared with others from Southern California, Northern California, Hawaii, Arizona and Nevada. They came out on top and were invited to the national meet. Gary also qualified in the standing long jump with a jump of 9ft. 6in. but he could only participate in one event and so he had to go in the relay. Gary has been to this meet once before. In 1988 he took first place in the nation for his age group in the standinglong jump with a jump of 7 ft. 11 in. This summer Gary has been playing baseball for the Orem All Stars and his team went to the nationals in Urbandale, Iowa. He also plays soccer, football, and basketball and ran for the Orem Junior Track Club. Gary is 14 years old and will be attending Orem Jr. High School this year. Raychellene is also 14 and is a student at Pleasant Grove Junior High where she has been on the track team for two years. She also has run for the North Valley Track Club for the last three years. She runs hurdles and also high i I v t: I .? Royalty. The Hershey Track program starts at the city level each year, with a track meet held through Pleasant Grove Recreation. Then the first and second place winners progress to a regional meet, and those first and second place winners win-ners go on to the state meet. The first place winners are then compared to the winners in the other states in the region. This year there are 14 young people from Utah attending' the national meet. Hunter safety class to begin A Hunter Safety Course will be held in Pleasant Grove beginning Aug. 20. The course is required for any person born after Dec. 3 1, 1965 to obtain a hunting license for the first time in Utah. , ' Boy Scouts will' also earn the Rifle Merit Badge. Topics to be included are hunter ethics and responsibility, firearms safety, wildlife management, game identification, survival, marksman-; ship, field dressing, game laws and wildlife conservation. 1 ' i." This summer she broke the state record at the state meet in St George with a jump of 8ft. 3 l2in., which was also her personal best. Raychellene is very active in sports. She plays on a city recreation recrea-tion basketball team which is in league play now. She also played on the first place girls' fast pitch softball team in Pleasant Grove. She is planning on playing basketball bas-ketball for the junior high ninth grade girls team. Raych is also a studentbody officer offi-cer for Pleasant Grove Junior High this coming school year.
