Many female students felt intimidated in-timidated by just having to walk past "stud row." Principal Bill Delaney aaid that the administration, faculty and PTSA of the school are doing all in their power to strive for 'positive student recognition and they felt that "stud row" was doing just the opposite of what they were trying to achieve. The Student of the Day is chosen cho-sen by the faculty on the basis of citizenship, academics and general school spirit. Viking of the Month is chosen by the PTSA and the administration on the basis of overall contribution toPGHS. VIP Club stands for Very Improved Im-proved Performers who have increased in-creased their GPA by at least .5 or higher from one grading period to tha next. rah, rahs... ii 1 0 i The "A" Team is for students who receive straight A'l during a grading period. Pride of the Week is for a group that has brought honor and pride to PC 113 and is awarded each week by the student council. . Mesl of Fortune is awarded at random, daily, by computer to a lucky student who has not been tardy ' o their first period of the day. ABC Award is a monthly award by the student council and administration admini-stration to those students and staff who have gone "above and beyond the call of duty." New sign, new flowers, new flags add charm to The sign catches the eye of all those who have glimpsed the west side of Pleasant Grove High School lately. Large white letters spelling out the words, "Pleasant Grove Vikings." stand out against the brick of the building. The sign is the gift from the Class of 1990 and was installed Just last week. Senior class officers who presented pre-sented the gift are President Matt Bulkley, Vice President Brandon Anderson, and Secretary Amy Atkinson. The faculty advisor was Darlene Hollingsworth. The sign is just one of many new additions to the appearance of the high school, according to Principal Bill Delaney. He noted that the school is in the process of adding new hanging plants throughout the school, a few each year. Plants are also being placed above the display cases, above Viking paintings, down the hallways, hall-ways, in the media center and they hope to have them in the classrooms class-rooms one day, also. Because the high school has had such a wonderful experience in the past with the foreign student ex change program, they are hanging i international flags along the walls - TwaT the traditorimn. American flags are located in each classroom and the National Anthem is played each Monday morning at the beginning of school. As the administration attempts to help build pride for the school in the students and faculty, they will also take it a step further with a section on Utah which will depict some of the beautiful scenes from Utah. These framed posters will encourage everyone to have pride in Utah. Along the wall to the academic area on the east, they hope to someday put in a Freedom Shrine honoring those from the Pleasant Grove area who have served in the armed forces in any of the military conflicts of the past. Any businesses or individuals who would like to help sponsor this Freedom Shrine are invited to contact Mr. Delaney at the high school at 785-8700. In the auditorium, several safety features have been added. A staircase stair-case with railings to the stage technical tech-nical area has been installed along with railings and braces for the stage catwalks. An elevator for the handicapped Vlihas been-built on the southside of the-building.: The parking areas have been re- asked to help local business owners to help them by hiring the students. Theyoungpeopleworkparttime and are released from school certain cer-tain hours to gain experience in their field of business. The students are well trained in the use of business machines, accounting, ac-counting, computers, as well as in other areas. Mr. Delaney said that when he came to the school he was appalled by some of the names given to areas ar-eas of the school, such as Academic Hall, sophomore hall, stud row, cowboy parking lot, drag strip, etc. He said that they plan to name the halls more appropriately. They would like to perhaps hold a contest con-test to choose these names. Mr. Delaney said they anticipate antici-pate an enrollment this year of about 1,240 students. At this rate of increase there will be a need for the second phase addition to the school. This would hopefully include in-clude 12 new classrooms and an addition to the band room. The high school will have about 11 new teachers this year, along with a new custodian, new administrator admin-istrator to replace Dr. George Bay-les Bay-les who moved to Provo High School, a new head lunch lady and two new lunchroom workers. The high school will have 25 new IBM compatible computers this year and will begin a computer science labratory. Mr. Delaney said another goal for the year is to get an active VICA Chapter going on campus. students Anv businesses who could find a place in their establishment far these young people would be well repaid for their efforts, Mrs. Childs said. The teacher said the students are dependable and willing to learn. The city council urged local businesses to participate so that students did not have to go to other cities for this experience.
