Show Thursday, februyy 21. 2308 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 17 SNIPPETTS of Springville History Helen Beardafl Recently the announcement announce-ment was made by the City Fathers that Spring-ville Spring-ville City had purchased the Villa Theater to be used for future productions produc-tions of the Springville Hayhouse, concerts and other city events. There has been much concern about where the playhouse play-house stage production would be held or what the future would hold for them in light of the old area under the library being be-ing replaced with a new building, without accommodations accom-modations for such productions. pro-ductions. The Villa would provide pro-vide ample space, but the closeness to the actors would not be there as it is in the theater-in-the round they have now, but it would be a good place to call HOME. , It would be appropriate at this time to give some historical background on this theater building. It was called the Rivoli Theater in former times and was owned by James Wingate until 1927 when he sold it to Emile Gst-lund, Gst-lund, w ho after some upgrades, up-grades, opened the theater the-ater on Dec. 20, 1927 with the movie, "East Side, West Side," a silent movie in black with subtitles. In 1928 a sound system sys-tem was installed which brought a whole new concept con-cept to the theater, and a program was listed in the Springville Independent, Indepen-dent, nmning a week at a time, Jan. 3 to.9, with several sev-eral different shows, two each night. The ad in the paper listed the movie for Jan. 2 as: "Clara Bow in The Saturday Night Kid.' (Make a date for a good time, see and hear the 'It' girl, hear her yourself -- the plucky, spanky, slangy (that is right) lovable lov-able little shop-girL Also the Collegian comedy 'Flying High' and Screen Vaudeville." The Jan. 9 program for the week was, "Sun and Mon 12-13 John Gilbert in 'His Glorious Night.' an unforgettable romance -because - John Gilbert's voice is added for the first time to the fascination of his love making. Also the all talking - Laurel & Hardy comedy 'Men of War' and also the Mo-tiolone Mo-tiolone News (this is correct) cor-rect) continuous shows every Sunday, starting at 4:00 P.M. Adm. until 6:30 P.M. 10 cents, and 20 cents. Evening shows 10 cents and 30 cents." : Theater announcements for Jan. 1938, "one week 'Music for Madame' featuring Joan Fontaine, Nino Martini" "Jan 11-12 -'Wells Fargo' Far-go' featuring Joel McCrea and Francis Dee. 'Navy blue & Gold' - A drama of football heroes with the comedy of young love - Robert Young, James Stewart, Lionel Barry-more. Barry-more. 'Thoroughbreds Don't Cry' - Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland." During the years 1938 to 39, the Johnson property proper-ty on the south side of the theater was purchased by Ostlund and the theater was expanded into a larger larg-er hall. A balcony was added and the seating capacity ca-pacity was increased, An air conditioning system was also added. The Springville Independent Inde-pendent dated May 12, 1938 reads: "RIVOLI gets new sound equipment. 'GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST -to be used in the inauguration of the revolutionary revo-lutionary new RCA Victor Vic-tor Sound Reproducing System - the magic voices voic-es of the screen. The system sys-tem has been installed in the last few days, the system sys-tem insures uniform distribution dis-tribution of all sound frequencies fre-quencies to every part of the theater, and has been placed behind the screen. Technical progress has been so rapid in the sound of motion pictures since music and speech were added to the image on the screen." "The new sound system enables the Rivoli fans to enjoy sound of the same high standard as that of the two finest theaters in the world - the Center Theater and Radio City Music Hall of Rockefeller Center in New York, for the sound systems are practically identical in operation and quality of reproduction." Many a romance was started by taking a favorite favor-ite girl to the movies, and then walking her home. Many kids were sent to the show house on Saturday Sat-urday to the matinee, the cost only a dime. That money was hard earned by doing chores such as feeding chickens, gathering gather-ing eggs, cleaning floors for mom, washing windows win-dows or helping dad with hoeing the weeds. The theater has changed hands many times, much renovation has gone on through the years. Movies Mov-ies lost out when the great big theaters came into being. The name was changed from Rivoli to the Villa. Plays started when Bill and Marilyn Brown took over the theater, the-ater, including production of their own. Ownership has changed again and it will be exciting ex-citing to see what new changes will be made to the building and what productions will be pre-. pre-. sented. Theater has been a part of Springville history his-tory since the pioneers first came to this area. Vaudeville acts, musicals and plays originating from the Salt Lake Theater The-ater in Salt Lake have all been presented here in our town, plus our own thespians and their stage performances. A special thanks to all who have taken the time to present our citizens with much needed live entertainment, en-tertainment, and may the new theater fulfil many dreams.
