Show Thursday, August 2, 2007 2 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Comments Now is the time to let your voices be heard fj Editor The other night I watched KSL News and saw our courageous cou-rageous Springville youngsters young-sters deliver their petition of 700 names to the Mayor asking him not to destroy the Library and City Park by moving the Fire Department Depart-ment across from Main Street. The Mayor's -explanation was amazing! I was baffled. His response was to ask the children, "How long do you think a city can go without a Fire Station?' How dare he scare the children with images of the town burning to the ground simply because they wanted to save the City Park? Imagine Imag-ine the burden they will have carry for the rest of their miserable lives! I am so outraged! I am so offened! All I want to do is suck my thumb and cry on the floor-uncontrollably. floor-uncontrollably. Nasty Wagon Wag-on Master! I heard it took them about three seconds to see through the Mayor's argument! They ask, How long can a City go without a Library and City Park?" Let's review a few facts: We have a fire station intact and operational. When the proposed city center is completed, com-pleted, we can build a new fire station right next to the old one. Build it right where the police station currently stands. We don't need to move the fire station more than fifty feet. We don't need to "waste money buying buy-ing additional land" as one Councilman said. We already al-ready have the land. The problem is not the fire station, sta-tion, it's the library. Why all the-superf icial excuses for moving the fire station in the first place? Unfortunately, the park park could avoid it. Come will also be gone, a monu-on monu-on Illeen! What is the real ment to their short-sighted- reason for moving the tire station? Let me take a stab at it: "Follow the Money!" The current building plan is a "hamburger short of a Happy Meal"- about 3 million mil-lion dollars short. It may be more, or less, but whatever the cost of adding a Library to the block, the council is short. There is a limited amount of cash to build the project without having to raise taxes and float a bond-- bond-- which would require a vote- and history is against them in that regard. They have enough cash to get what they want, but not enough for a Library. Vacating the fire station for a future Library is essential to the plan because raising taxes for a New Library is a whole lot easier than raising taxes for government of- fices. But either way, a tax increase corning. Allow me too repeat myself my-self Taxes will be raised to build a new Library. And you will gladly vote for it.
