Show Thursday, May 10, 2007 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 23 Can you find Nebo? 2007 Chiysler Pacifica Daniel Souza STAFF WRITER Combining the attributes of a minivan, passenger car and SUV in one distinctive distinc-tive vehicle, the Chrysler Pacifica came to market as one of the first vehicles in the sports tourer segment. Introduced originally in the spring of 2003, the Chrysler Chrys-ler Pacifica was targeted to reach the more than 2.3 million consumers moving between traditional vehicle segments each year. But the four-year-old SUV rolls off the dealer's showroom with some fresh options for the buyer. The 2007 Pacifica brings standard side curtain air bags and electronic stability stabil-ity progr . mong added standard s:r.my features. Externally, the Pacifica's cues and lines remain the same. But some of the bigger big-ger changes happened in side, or-better yet, ur !er the hood. The 4.0-liter V-6 produces produc-es 255 hp 6000 rpm and 265 lb. ft. of torque 4200 rpm, which is 15 more lb. ft. of torque at peak power rpm, and as much as 35 lb. ft. more torque throughout the power curve than the orevious 3.5-liter V-6 engine. en-gine. "The 2007 Pacifica's new 4.0-liter, V-6 engine improves im-proves the torque curve in the low- to mid-range for more pep during acceleration ac-celeration from idle," said Bob Lee, Chrysler's VP of powertrain engineering. "Reductions in powertrain noise, vibration and harshness harsh-ness (NVH) also rank the new Pacifica among the best-in-class." To take Lee's word on his team's vehicle wasn't enough. Along with two cousins, I decided to set sail to Mesa, AZ hoping to find how smooth or rough the Pacifica would handle on the road ahead. But its navigation system hampered our departure. The- Pacifica designers decided to install its navigation navi-gation screen in the dashboard, dash-board, with its mirrored image housed where your speedometer is. The idea is clever less time glancing glanc-ing at the thing and more time looking at the road, but forget trying to follow fol-low the GPS-guided map; the screen's display is both small and hard to read. The vehicle did however how-ever offer plenty of back passenger leg room and a rear screen fitted with a six-DVD changer on the front console and wireless headphones, perfect for an approximately ten hour drive. Navigation issues and technicalities aside the Pacifica did smoothly move across states and made it to the Grand Canyon state. And before I forget it, our test drive did handle very smooth the whole way. The automaker also made sure to include high safety features in the vehicle aimed at 'active families,' as described by Chrysler itself. The 2007 Pacifica models offer more standard safety features inr eluding all-row side curtain air bags, electronic stability program, electronic throttle throt-tle control, traction control and an available rear back up camera. With a 5-star safety rating rat-ing from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for front- and side-impact, and four stars (the highest rating of vehicles tested in its class) for roll-over, Pacifica Paci-fica engineers took a safe measure. The estimated city consumption con-sumption rates at 16 mpg. As for the highway numbers num-bers performed somewhat Nebo is a cute, cuddly cud-dly bear native to Hobble Creek Canyon.
