Show "Thursday, May 10, 2007 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Early citizen Nicholas Harmon Groesbeck to be featured at Historical Society lecture May 23 Helen Beardall Wednesday, May 23, is the date set for the last of the Springville Historical Society lecture for 2007. This event will be held in the City Conference Center Cen-ter at 50 S. Main at 7 p.m. The public is invited. Featured speakers for the evening will be C. Jess Groesbeck, M.D. from Mount Vernon, WA, a great-grandson of Nicholas Nicho-las Harmon Groesbeck, Sara Robertson, a great-great-granddaughter of Nicholas, currently living liv-ing in Orem (a student at BYU-I), and Russell Hales, Phd. from Salt Lake City, a great-grandson. Their topic will be the Life and .Times of Nicholas Harmon Groesbeck. Nicholas Harmon Groesbeck, Groes-beck, born in April 1842, will be of great interest to all the citizens of Springville, Spring-ville, as it is presented by these descendants of an early Springville settler. Before the Groesbeck family decided to move to Utah, young Nicholas Harmon was responsible for a fire destroying some grain, which resulted in a lawsuit by the owners, against his father, Nicholas Groesbeck. A Mr. Abraham Abra-ham Lincoln (yes, future President of the US) was a lawyer, involved in the lawsuit. Come and find out how and whom did he represent? rep-resent? Nicholas Harmon was the proprietor of a general merchandise store, which he bought from his father, featuring many goods brought by freight wagon from the eastern part of the United States in 1863. The store was operated by his father Nicholas from 1858 through to 1863., Nicholas Harmon served two missions for the LDS Church, first to the Eastern States in 1872 and the second sec-ond to New Zealand from 1880-1882. Grosebeck built an interesting inter-esting home for his family fam-ily that was located on the corner of 100 South and Main Street in Springville. This home was a lovely mansion serving people of the community on special spe-cial occasions and a dance band played on the roof top fenced area, with people peo-ple dancing there, as the cool breezes of the evening gently flowed through the air. This must have been an exciting time and place to be. This building was built by Nicholas Groesbeck in 1858 and later sold to his son, Nicholas Harmon Groesbeck, in 1863. The mountains are in the background, so building was located on the east side of the road. Who are the people? One lad is peeking out through the door window. Do you have ringing or buzzing in your ears? This beautiful home was built by Nicholas Harmon Groesbeck for his family in the late 1800's. Please note the fenced area on top of the roof. This area at times featured a brass dance band and people were able to dance there. Note the wonderful architecture of this once stately building. This home was torn down and replaced with Dove's Grocery Store, and now the city is planning to build their new office compound on this property. The police department had 52 calls from May 2 to May 8 with 10 for animals. Another Little Giant ladder was taken from a different garage, and a laptop computer, com-puter, $600 in cash and a digital camera were taken from a home. Kevin Booth, 232 E. 400 North, Mapleton, was arrested ar-rested for domestic violenceassault vio-lenceassault and criminal mischief. Jessica Porter, 438 W. 1430 South, Orem, was arrested for illegal consumption of alcohol and public intoxication. Scott Preston, 1364 S. 1270 East, Spanish Fork, was arrested for a warrant. war-rant.
