Show Comments We are not better people tKan unmigrants coining to our Country! Editor: I am voicing my thoughts on Art Larson's letter last week. I don't believe that we only have two choices-either choices-either close our borders to illegal immigrants or witness wit-ness the demise of our beloved be-loved country. I recall that our forefathers (therefore, we) invaded this very country and did the very thing people are accusing illegal aliens of doing, ripping rip-ping it from the lives of the people who were here before us-slaughtering millions, with no mercy, all in the name of God and righteousness and a vision of a promised land. This land is not promised only to us but to all people who want peace and freedom. free-dom. The illegal immigrants I know are not trying to take over this country, nor are they creating wars or shedding millions of lives. The people I know are peace loving and are trying try-ing desperately to provide a better life for their families. fami-lies. Most of them work 10 times harder than we, as Americans, do. So many times they do the dirty, difficult jobs that nobody here wants to do, and they do it at roinimum wages or less and are just grateful to . be able to work. It seems that some among us claim not to want them here yet are willing to exploit them and keep them in poverty, thus forcing some to go on 'welfare, etc. The immigrants who are coming to our country, asking for our help, and only wanting to make a better life for themselves and their families (as our forefathers did for us), could not possibly submerge sub-merge our country into a third world country all by themselves. There is enough work and food in this world for every mouth-if only it go to them. It takes war, hatred, bigotry, control issues, improper judgment, ego and unrighteous living to throw down a civilization. I recall that Rome fell because of unrighteous dominion, riotous and adulterous living and their attempt to rule and control all the world (as it would appear we are also trying to do as the current great superpower). If America is destined to fall, could it happen because we are, as a nation, following Rome's example? It is very true that if we do fail to learn from the lessons of histo- Springville Herald 269 E. 400 South Springville, UT 84663 An edition of The Daily Herald a Lee Enterprises, Inc. Rome was not lost because of foreign invaders, in-vaders, they were merely the tool Rome was lost because be-cause their infrastructure was a mess, they HAD lost the moral and common values needed to govern themselves and could not maintain their own country coun-try let alone world because of such corruption within their own ranks. That does seem to be the way of it, doesn't it? Maybe we need to point the finger at ourselves first and see how we are doing on our own home front, in our homes, in our families, in our marriages, in our schools, in our governments, gov-ernments, in our churches. If we were strong and sure of ourselves and our motives and agendas and had ourselves in order, we would not feel threatened and we would have nothing noth-ing to fear. That is one thing we are all faced with in this day and age-fear. It is all pervading on our beautiful planet right now. We need to get over it and get going! All polls do not show that Americans want immigration im-migration reform. I will be the first to admit that we have a lot to work on (with no easv or quick solutions in sight), and not all people coming into our country have our best interests in their hearts. There are, for that matter, many American Ameri-can who don't have our . country's best interests in mind either. The truth is there to see. But I believe in the basic goodness of the human and our ability abil-ity to love, create, share, include and serve others. I believe that most people have that in their hearts. Are we truly our brother's broth-er's keeper? I believe we are. Gary's message to the world has been "They rise highest who lift as they go." I couldn't agree more. The most powerful and interesting in-teresting thing about it is that sometimes we need a hand to lift us. I don't know a single person who has not experienced both sides-many times, and isn't it wonderful that we can do that? Both ways. What is America anyway? any-way? Why is it the promised prom-ised land? Why was it chosen? What are we supposed sup-posed to do with it? How can we possibly be a shining shin-ing light for all nations if we hide ourselves behind barricades and high walls? If we put up barriers (mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically) in order to lock others out, that means that we, in turn, lock ourselves in. Huge limitation there, if you ask me. . What, if not fear, ignorance igno-rance and ego could possible pos-sible cause us to forsake our heritage, our obligation obliga-tion as children of the Most High Creator, our promise to all of our brothers broth-ers and sisters? One of our most blessed gifts is to be able to live in this greatest of all countries, to set an example to the world, to pave the way and open the gates of peace and love and brotherhood to ALL the inhabitants of this planet. Will it be just another Saturday? Or will you and your family stop to remember those who have died and put their lives on the line for each one of us? In declaring the first Veterans Day-then called Armistice Armi-stice Day-Congress said that the day should be "com-merorated "com-merorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual mu-tual understanding between nations." Those are the things we as individuals can do. We can give thanks and pray for our veterans and for those who are new serving in the armed forces. We must honor those who did not return from our nation's na-tion's wars. And we must thank those who did return with wounds and memories of the horrors of war. These brave men and women had the courage to do the things necessary to hety make a better world for others. We hope the day will come when peace will be a reality for everyone, everywhere in the world, when we dont have to send our young men and women into conflict. When we can celebrate peace on Veterans Day.
