Show 12 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, September 21, 2006 Lady Red Devil Soccer: Injuries and two victories On September 12, the Lady Red Devils visited upstart Lehi. The Pioneers were ready to play" and they were extremely quick and most often first to the ball. At this stage in the season, sea-son, the injuries are starting to pile up oh the Devils. The girls were sluggish to the ball throughout the game. Crosby Joyner has struggled with a quad injury for over a month. Chase Joyner has seen limited minutes with a sprained ankle. Both Joyner girls were pulled out of the Lehi game after taking knocks and coming up lame. Heather Hatfield is nursing nurs-ing a calf injury. Karissa Henage sustained a concussion concus-sion in a collision at Lehi. The heat was intense and Coach Ryan Swanson was managing man-aging the girls' fatigue and hydration with frequent substitutions. sub-stitutions. It was not a pretty game. In the third minute, Rachel Fischer took a through ball on the right side and burned her def ender.on a long breakaway break-away to the goal. She made the correct choice and shot high to the near post but the ball glanced off the bottom of the 90 and dropped dead in the box. After getting smoked early in the game, Lehi marked Fischer tightly for the rest of the game and effectively neutralized her. There was no score at the half with both sides having taken 10 shots. The struggle continued in the second half with Lehi executing a fine offside trap, that caught the Devils multiple mul-tiple times. Lehi was running well and it was clear that they believed that they had the spirit and speed to recover recov-er if the trap were broken. , Karlie Jensen did break the trap and had a 40-yard breakaway in which no defenders de-fenders could catch her. She poked a ball through her defender at the center-line and was off to the races. She was accelerating away from them. At the 18, she chose correctly and shot low to the far post. The Lehi keeper made a fortunate diving save to keep the game knotted. The Devils' keeper, Sadie Sa-die Clements, was equally sharp. A handball was called in the box and the Pioneers were awarded a PK. It was the first dot-shot that Clements Cle-ments has faced all year. Lehi's spirits were high as they set their sights on the freshman. Young Clements didn't flinch. She guessed correctly as the shot went on-target to the low left post. She dived and tipped the ball wide of the goal, recovered, and poked. Gements has remarkable re-markable hands. As a freshman, fresh-man, she is one of the top keepers in the state. Spring-ville Spring-ville has a bright future with her in net. The Devils finally put together to-gether an attack that scored. The tests also provide valuable experience and information informa-tion to students and parents. par-ents. The Plan test is for sophomores soph-omores and takes only one morning to complete (September (Sep-tember 26, 8 to 11:30 a.m.). It is formatted like the ACT; the test allows the student to experience the ACT format, and it gives the student an indication of his or her strengths and weaknesses before the student stu-dent takes the actual ACT. The Iowa test is for juniors ju-niors and takes two mornings morn-ings to complete (September (Septem-ber 26, 8 to 11:30 a.m. and September 27, 8 to 9:40 a.m.). This test provides the student with an idea of how he or she is doing in comparison with the rest of the nation in subjects such as English, math, and reading. Each student should strive to do their best in order to get an accurate idea of their strengths and weaknesses. Crosby Joyner brought the ball up the right wing. The defense stuck with the forwards for-wards which created space for Joyner to work. She spotted spot-ted Henage in the center and passed the ball to her feet. Jessica Rogers had sprinted sprint-ed up from her position at stopper to join the attack. Henage saw her coming and lofted soft pass to Rogers on the left. Rogers took the ball in full stride at the 25. Rogers' Rog-ers' shot arched perfectly in the high left corner for the go-ahead goal, Devils, 1-niL Lehi did not roll over. They kept their own attack at full throttle. Three minutes before be-fore the end of regular time, they put together a drive on the right side. Two attackers at-tackers were left unmarked on the back door when the cross came in to the center. The Lehi attacker trapped it, dribbled once to set the ball on her right foot and shot as the defense scrambled to recover. The hard shot went just high off the crossbar and over tne end line. Fischer beat her defender and fired a laser to the far post to make the score 2-nil.
