Family Volunteer Day in county Saturday Johanna Lindstrom, trainer of Peruvian Paso Horses, gets "Espiritu" ready for transfer to new owners. Horse auction brings donation to American Red Cross chapter The Mountain Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross was the recipient of a unique contribution contri-bution when a Peruvian Paso stud colt was sold at a recent auction and proceeds from the sale were donated to the Red Cross. The four-month-old colt, named "El Espiritu De La Cruz Roja" (The spirit of the Red Cross), was donated by Donald T. and Elaine D. Nelson, owners and operators of El Ranco De Animacion, a training and breeding breed-ing facility for Peruvian Paso horses in Mapleton. Donald Nelson is a former member of the board of directors for the Mountain Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and recognizes the Chapter's need for public support. "The loyal staff and hundreds of volunteers at the Red Cross are constantly working to relieve the suffering caused by the disasters disas-ters that seem to impact our communities every day," says Nelson. "The public often seems to overlook the Red Cross when it comes to making donations and that is something that needs to change." "Espirito" was sired by the Champion of Champion stallion "Destino" and carries with him a gene pool provided by some of the top Peruvian Paso horses in the United States and Peru. The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Disaster assistance is provided free and made possible through the generosity gener-osity of the American public. The American Red Cross receives no government funding for disaster service. Utah County families will be coming together Nov. 20 to confront a serious problem in our community-hunger. According to a 1996 hunger study, one in five children under the age of 12 live in families where there is not enough food. In Utah County, this equates to more than 14,000 children. Of the thousands of people assisted by the Utah Valley Val-ley Regional Food Bank, more than 5,700 of them were children. chil-dren. The United Way Volunteer Center is now recruiting families to support the Utah Valley Regional Re-gional Food Bank in Provo during dur-ing the first "National Family Volunteer Day" on Nov. 20. Scott Snow, the volunteer Center Director said "Hunger is a serious issue in our community. This drive is an opportunity for the community to work together to help thousands of their neighbors neigh-bors who may be without adequate ade-quate food for this winter. Over the next two months, the Regional Region-al Food Bank needs more than 225,000 pounds of food to help these families in need in Utah County. Other projects that families could do during the first "National "Nation-al Family Volunteer Day" include visiting a nursing home, giving blood and making decorations or holiday stockings to donate to charities Families who wish to participate partici-pate in the annual "National Family Volunteer Day" should call the United Way .Volunteer Center at 374-8108.
