Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.s) are defined by law as physicians and surgeons of the lower extremity. They provide comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis and treatment treat-ment of diseases and injuries of the human foot and ankle. Treatment Treat-ment of various conditions may include palliative care, biomecha-nical biomecha-nical modalities, physical therapy, thera-py, surgical intervention and the prescription of both systemic and topical medications. Commonly recognized conditions include heel, calf, and arch pain, painful bunions and hammertoes, flat feet, ingrowninfected toenails, warts and painful corns and calluses. Over the past several decades, podiatry has evolved from a palliative art-chiropody-into a medical and surgical specialty of the lower limb. Educationally, a D.P.M. has completed a required premedical curriculum in an undergraduate institution, and has taken the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), similar to allopathic (M.D.) and osteopathic (D.O.) school applicants. Based upon undergraduate performance, the MCAT scores and a rigorous interview process, heshe is chosen to matriculate at one of the seven colleges of Podiatric medicine. Podiatric medical school encompasses an additional four years of study, and mirrors the general curriculum of most medical medi-cal schools; however, the podiatric podiat-ric medical students is involved in additional specialty courses dealing specifically with lower extremity anatomy, biomechanics, biomechan-ics, podiatric medicine and podiatric podi-atric surgery. After completion of four years of podiatric medical school and successfully passing National Podiatric Board examinations, the D.P.M. may choose to participate in a residency program. Residency Residen-cy programs range in length from one year to three years and may be general podiatric medical residencies, or residencies concentrating con-centrating on podiatric surgery, orthopedics, primary care or biomechanics. The D.P.M. is then truly a physician who specializes spe-cializes in and is uniquely qualified quali-fied to treat disorders of the human foot and ankle.
